YOU CAN BE A DESIGNER An interview with Graeme of @thisisjamhot about his journey as a Graphic Designer - in the style of a childrens book. I made this in about 2 weeks, powering through burnout after a crazy busy year, trying to make up for time I'd missed while studying abroad. I think at one point I was 90% redbull. Last slide is my watercolour illustrations. I love to hand draw assets for projects when possible. Thank you for your time Graeme!

Making Waves - CalMac Ferries Captured during the 40 minute ferry crossing over to Arran with @belleandsebastian’s Stuart Murdoch for @calmacferries. This is the first in a series of short doc films about people whose creativity has been inspired by Scotland’s west coast islands. We shot a lot of this on a vintage 75mm that, in hindsight, didn’t have the best colour rendering, and when shooting wide open the character really took over. Once converted to Rec.709 shots were flatter than I’d expected, I worked on getting colour back into the image first and, 165368 nodes later… ta da! Agency & morning roll providers: @thisisjamhot Full film is available to watch now on YouTube.

Some outtakes, unseen footage and BTS from our shoot with the boys at @thisisjamhot for @calmacferries back in March. 1/ Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. Moments after packing the camera away these birds took flight over the houses, Ross managed to run and capture this right before they settled. 2/ BTS snippets. We’d kept our kit as light as possible for the shoot as we were island hopping and jumping to and from locations. Very quickly discovered it was far too windy for a matte box and reflector/diffusion (on both the ferry and the islands!) Thanks @eilidhloan for running around with the handycam, until the sea sickness got us all. 3/ Quiet moments with @annarussellmartin on the ferry from Oban to South Uist. 4/ Thankfully we were scheduled to film indoors for most of the second day, it was gale force winds and the worst sideways rain I’d ever seen outside. The islanders seemed unfazed. Filming in @northuistdistillery with an actual ceilidh band, followed by the best gin and tonics from the distillery bar. 5/ There were lots of unplanned locations spotted as we drove past, like this beautiful pier in Harris and the road that led to it. 6/ Thanks to @ross.baynham for taking one for the team and lifting everyone’s spirits, we were all absolutely frozen at the end of a long day. And to the coach-load of Italian men who cheered us on. Calanais Standing Stones. 7/ Sunset over Harris.

We had a blast speaking at @designfestbrum a few weeks ago! ⚓️ On the theme of ‘change’, @sabrinashim and @francescahadland challenged designers to rethink their creative process through language – and see themselves as writers in their own way. Judging from the great chats afterwards, we definitely struck a chord. It was also great to hear about change from the design perspective. Talks from @rjrhodes @someoneinlondon and @samarmaakaroun @pentagramdesign stood out for how they translated cultural context into design with real care and precision. Graeme from @thisisjamhot had the room in stitches with his supreme storytelling. And we were simply in awe of @coldwarsteve and @ledbydonkeys. Thanks to @luketonge and @danielalcorn for bringing us along to BDF 2026. And thanks to @veritymilligan and @zach_red for the fantastic photos! Make sure to follow @designfestbrum for news of their next brilliant event in 2027.

Back to work after a great time away, and honestly can't believe how amazing Birmingham Design Festival was! @designfestbrum My absolute favourite talks were Barrington Reeves from @too_gallus, Greame McGowan from @thisisjamhot, @frankieratford and @yukai_du 🤩 So inspiring to hear their experiences, and I find it incredible that all daytime talks are free (how the hell do they do it?!) 😁 Thanks so much @luketonge, @danielalcorn and the BDF team for all the hard work preparing such a great event full of creativity, joy, togetherness and inspiration ❤️ Jason and I also met some lovely people: @nattykiriharris @hannahsauurrr @michelleturton @ems_illo and Grace 💛 And we were finally able to meet Katy, founder of @creativeboom! We managed to squeeze a chat amongst all the excitement and the back and forth between the venues ☺️  I'm still buzzing from the three days 🔥 We'll be back!

What a great time @designfestbrum, so many brilliant talks and people, nothing could dampen the spirits, not even our wet feet! Obviously didn’t get to see all the talks (if only) but all the ones we did see spoke of creativity, courage and connection. There was bravery, vulnerability, different approaches to change and plenty of inspiration. As ever @luketonge, @danielalcorn and the amazing team of volunteers curated an awesome event. Big love to everyone we did see in no sense of order… @ellmer.stefan, Serlina Small @weareabstrakt, Danny Miller @humanafterallstudio, Kevin and Emma @alliesstudio, Graeme @thisisjamhot, @davidjonathanjohnston, and @frankieratford (that’s Frankie ‘fucking’ Ratford!). All ace, all inspiring, all given us food for thought, renewed energy and a reminder that we love good people 💚
