JAMES STREET CURATION ~ Up close and personal.

When sourcing art and objects, I’m interested in what each piece brings to a room and what happens when the pieces are seen together. Colour, surface, proportion and placement all shape that relationship.

In the living area, Dane Lovett’s Magic Pipe, 2023, introduces a concentrated field of blue. Its depth is particularly compelling against the warmth of the timber and the quieter tones of the furnishings.

Ara Dolatian’s Held, 2025, offers a different kind of presence. Its irregular form and glazed surface catch the light, bringing a sculptural counterpoint to the room’s clean architectural lines.

On the kitchen bench, pieces sourced through Pépite Gallery sit against the expressive stone. A collection by Hilary Green occupies the dining table, where the individual forms can be appreciated as a group.

The master suite takes a more intimate approach, with a sculpture by Emily Ellis and a custom cushion made in Raf Simons velvet. Here, the relationship between object and textile gives the room another dimension.

For me, curation is as much about placement as selection. A piece needs space to be understood, and a setting that allows its character to come through.

Snagged an exclusive for @financialreview on my last trip to Paris.

Next April @le_grand_palais, Art Paris is staging a significant showcase of Australian contemporary art, inviting 12 galleries to represent select artists there. This is thanks to the expertise of @palaisdetokyo curator, Daria de Beauvais (who is guest-curating it; pictured in 2nd pic on George Street in Sydney) and the enthusiastic backing of Art Paris director @guillaumepiens

Thankyou for the conversations that contributed to this story Daria, Guillaume, @lisa.boulet, @cassandra_bird, Nick Curtis (Chalk Horse) and - though his quotes weren’t featured this time - @sidpattni, who I visited on his residency with @citedesartsparis in a wonderful corner studio on the Seine. And 🙏 to @enaalvaa_ for the intros.

In addition to the Australia-based galleries will be European and London-based galleries who work with Australian artists, including @artist_naomi_hobson / @rebeccahossackartgallery @gregoryhodgestudio & Brook Andrew

But wait, there’s more. Archie Moore (@kithandkin_2024) will be rebooting his installation from @biennalesydney ‘A Home Away From Home (Bennelong/Vera’s Hut)’, presented by Marrickville gallery @thecommercial

Meanwhile, @fondationopale will present rare early boards from the Papunya (western desert) movement as well as select paintings by Emily Kame Kngwarreye 😍 fresh from the six-month retrospective @tate in a space designed by artist and architect @marcleschelier

Galleries thus far confirmed are @comagallery @sullivanstrumpf @thisisnofantasy @stationgalleryaustralia @cassandrabird.gallery & Chalk Horse

More to be announced!
