Really great Open Studios weekend and launch of The Tees Show exploring the T shirt as art form. Also, the opening of 'Working in Progress' by Joe Hancock literally taking over the Platform Space. Thank you to all those who visited over the weekend. I had some great conversations and met some fascinating , lovely people. Huge round of applause for all the 'Tees' team, especially Mike Chavez Dawson, for all the effort in putting on such a great show. As well as the Rogue team, essential behind the scenes, David and Martin. Lastly, all the amazing artists at Rogue, my hats off to you all. Just wish I managed to get round more studios... #openstudios #Manchesterartists #teesshow #workinginprogress @mchavezdawsonart

Issue 14 is out!! Read now via link in bio 🎊 We’re very excited about this special issue on Art & Design which also includes a specially dedicated insert to American industrial designer Douglas Kelley. Issue 14 'Instruction: Storytelling in Art and Design'. The contributions in this issue look at the interconnections of art and design through ideas of storytelling and instruction, exploring systems of making and engaging. It includes the regular two features documenting recent exhibitions, events or launches: an exhibition Storytelling with Objects organised by Natsumi Tabusa, and the presentation of Stork and XYZ, two furniture concepts created by George L. Legendre of IJP Architects. There are three additional contributions in this special issue to initiate the conversation: an essay on a unique phone manual by the design and invention studio Special Projects; an essay on the poetics of furniture in the work of furniture designer and maker John Makepeace; and a work by Bruce McLean which comes in the form of a letter.  Our third insert is dedicated to Douglas Kelley, a significant yet overlooked American industrial designer whose activities and projects might be seen a unique example of ‘total industrial design’. Included is an article and profile of Kelley by Jeremy Myerson, originally published in Design Week in April 1989. This is followed by a tracing of his career and activities by this insert's editor Gertrude Gibbons, with quotes from his autobiography and other writings, and rare images of his projects from the Kelley archive. #soanywaymagazine #freemagazine #onlinemagazine #independentmagazine #artanddesign #instruction #manual #storytelling #photography #archive #douglaskelley #industrialdesign #film #music #instructionalart #conceptualart #oulipo

This Saturday!!! A slight amendment it’s from 14:00 to 16:00 or 2pm to 4pm, but if you do come early - there’s a lovely cafe, and cool gift shop. VENTRILOQUISM: The Lost Voice Spoken by Others… Curated by Artist Curator, Mike Chavez-Dawson Opening Event: Sat 24th Aug, 2pm - Show runs to the 10th Nov 2024 THE WHITAKER MUSEUM & ART GALLERY Haslingden Road, Rossendale, BB4 6RE UK 01706 260785 info@thewhitaker.org This group show will explore the idea of ‘Ventriloquism’ both directly and indirectly, drawing upon topical thematics including data harvesting, hyperreality, forgotten histories, misinformation, gaslighting, mediation, and artificial intelligence. The artists selected traverse a breadth of media and methods, from the traditional; painting, drawing, print and sculpture, to lens-based, digital, contemporary performance and conceptual practices. It aims to raise an informed debate around how information is both mediated to us by both the marketing & political forces via algorithms and how these act or speak on our behalf. Featuring over twenty five artists including several collaborations with Mike Chavez-Dawson such as AI, Rebecca Davy, Brian Reed, Dave Beech, Axel Bottenberg, Louise Adkins, Adkins Purcell (Collaborative practice of Louise Adkins & Jonathan Purcell), Chris Alton, Julie Cassels, Jane Chavez-Dawson, Hilary Jack, Chris Leach, Nye Thompson, Brass Art (Collaborative practice of Chara Lewis, Kristin Mojsiewicz & Anneké Pettican), Jeffrey Knopf, Karen Densham, Alan Baker, Pat Flynn, David Alker, Peter Liddell, David Gledhill, Jake & Dinos Chapman (from TCDFC*), Sarah Hardacre, Richard Shields, Kieran Leach, Liam Scully, Paul Vivian, and Evita Ziemele. The exhibition has been kindly supported by: Rogue Artists’ Studios, Selfish, and Neal’s Yard Health Remedies *The Chavez-Dawson Family Collection #contemporaryart #groupshow #curatedshow #artists #thewhitaker #mikechavezdawson https://www.thewhitaker.org/whats-on-article/workshops-and-professional-development-for-artists/ventriloquism-the-lost-voice-spoken-by-others/ https://www.thewhitaker.org/contact/
