VICE party for Tattoo Age season 2 at the New Era flagship store on September 11th, 2012. 📸 by Taji Ameen @tajcam for VICE

The night before this was a wild one. I started off at St. Jerome’s, followed by Beauty & Essex (Dimitry was DJing), and then I closed down the local townie bar back in my neighborhood in Brooklyn. I had a lot of energy to burn off that night…

Needless to say, I was very hungover the next day. As such, I don’t have much of a story for this one.

Since I had to schlep it into the city for work anyway, I figured I’d check this party out — hangover be damned. VICE was throwing it and there was free Bushmills all night, so it had to be decent. I hung around for a bit but the brain pain was getting the best of me so I headed home and crashed after an hour or two.

The Vice Guide to Everything premiere at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema and the after party at Lit Lounge back on Dec 1st, 2010. I found this photo set on the Vice Facebook page and it’s uncredited so 📸 by ???

I met up with some friends at Iggy’s in the LES around 6:30 to warm up the old liver with some $3 drafts of Guinness.

After a few rounds we made our way over to Sunshine to see what this new Vice travel show was all about. It was being billed as “Jackass meets 60 Minutes” and MTV was involved.

We got to the theater right before it started and grabbed our seats. The Vice Guide to Everything was a TV show and the screening featured a few of the early episodes. It was a wild show and pretty funny.

One of the stand out segments was about a maniac named Jay Thunderbolt (slide 1 w/ Shane) who ran a strip club out of his grandmas house, or something like that, in a super sketchy neighborhood in Detroit.

After the screening wrapped up we headed over to Lit Lounge for the after party. There was free Sailor Jerry’s rum, because of course there was, and some live music (I can’t figure out what band played).

We were having a good time when we noticed a tall, slim figure across the room. It was Jay Thunderbolt himself. We went over to say hello and ended up hanging out with him for a while.

We spent a good chunk of the night partying with the guy while he told us insane stories about Detroit, like getting shot in the face.

One of the producers from the show came over and started talking to me about Jay. He said Jay hadn’t left Detroit in 20 years prior to this screening/party. The first thing Jay asked when they booked him the flight was “how many guns can I bring onboard?” and if he could get a seat in the smoking section.

The party was a great time and we got to booze it up with some proper weirdos.

One thing that brings me more enjoyment than probably anything else is bringing quality friends together to connect, build community & ultimately create commerce. As a serial entrepreneur it gets really lonely at times building & busting your butt everyday trying to make it happen. Sometimes you forget there are other founders, executives & disrupters like yourself who are facing similar challenges. By coming together, sharing ideas, struggles, challenging questions & supporting each other to become better versions of ourselves it always gives you a sense of strength & comfort that you are ultimately not alone on this journey. For years now I spend more than 50% of my time traveling city to city & the one thing I love to do is bring three types of people I meet together for a hotpot, kbbq or a nice meal. They are artists, entrepreneurs & venture capitalists who are all a bit eccentric & out of the box in their thinking. By the end of the meal quality friends of mine who didn’t know each other before the meal come away as amazing friends & even sometimes date lol, start ventures or close a major deal. I love it! Funny thing is I have always started whatsapp or wechat groups so everyone can stay in touch & network after, but I do this manually. As I’ve been building our #superapp OPEN I recently thought, “What if I just solve my own problem and build Eventbrite meets WhatsApp group chat?” So I did, we launched this product feature this week with our first official @opensuperapp event with our amazing partner FMC (#franchisemediacollective) started by none other #CAA legend Frank Jung. You can now download OPEN SuperApp on #ios or #android stores and create an event, send out the invite link & when anyone downloads they will get deeplinked to rsvp on the event & automatically get added to an exclusive group chat for those attending on #OPEN! You also can make instant print on demand merchandise for the event itself - so dope 😎💯🔥 Anways, all that to say I’m excited that this social commerce platform we are building can be used to empower everyone to create meaningful connections (events), build powerful communities (chat) & also create commerce (merch).

I am not wholly sure what I was doing in LA, but my blood moves when I think of the great people who made time for me: Old friends, new friends, party friends, occasionals, accidentals, romances and references.

To anyone who invited me to a party (@vacationsonline, @scott.sternberg @dalyabenor @mollygrant), or an opening (@reillykdavidson), or just had me over for a drink (@lisaloveofficial) or a meal (@balintzsako @natmatsky), the Xenia was in eXcess, and I hope I drank it up to your favor.

My greatest thanks are for my old friend @gegdela (last pic, circa 2000-ish), who gave me a bed, a roof, wheels, a home, even beach towels—just like that; not sure why. May the sun never stop shining on your fair Irish face, which cannot be good for it. Love you.

Where to start, and what to say about Matt. How about oh say the mid 00's, in a strange land called Brooklyn...

1. 2005 or so. Matt had dreads, I had short hair. And Matt, I'm sorry for posting this. It was a weird scene, and everyone had terrible style, mainly because we all worked for a glossy fashion magazine and would get sent tons of goofy swag from the advertisers. Matt was probably an intern at this point. The media narrative is that the freebies and parties somehow made the job worth it, but it was actually the friends who did. We all worked super close together and it was awesome. I remember him proposing that "we need to have a design department" and some dumbass manager laughed at the idea, but within a short time Matt had the last laugh and made a massive impact. For more on that check @old_vice because they say it better than I can.

2. March 2009. Matt with our buddy JJ who was leaving the company, so we organized an epic "Friends Are The Best" prank night to send him off to Tahiti or Bali or wherever he's been the last 13 years. This is a screengrab of JJ's defunct travel blog "Torching What's Left of My 20's", and what he says is true, Matt is a standup guy. Actually, he is the most standup guy.

Fast forward 10 years, a few hundred issues, thousands of nights out, a million drinks, one awesome wedding in Dallas and we're in...

3. March 2020. Matt has short hair now, and I occasionally find a dread in mine. By this point Matt and I didn't cross paths at work as much as in prior years, but got together for civilized lunches and after work drinks once in awhile. I had seen him and Katy a few months prior in New Orleans at a punk show at Poor Boys and we had a night. But we didn't see each other more than in passing at the office. This photo is from Matt's last day at the company, his now massively successful design department had organized him a going away party in the test kitchen. I remember being super sad that he was leaving, but happy that he and Katy were moving to Austin. We all gave speeches, we all hugged.
