“You’re here. You’re in your fucking kit. If you’re not gonna fucking run until there’s nothing left in your fucking legs, why the fuck have you turned up in the fucking first place?”

Ahead of this afternoon’s Brighton vs Palace fixture, I dug out some photos of another titanic clash from a decade ago – the 15th REMF game between Seagulls and Eagles supporters.

The Robert Eaton Memorial Fund was set up to commemorate Brighton fan Robert, a Cantor Fitzgerald broker who lost his life at the World Trade Center on 9/11. The annual fixture attracted numerous ex-pros over the years such as Peter Ward, Simon Rodger, Ricky Marlowe and Rob Quinn.

It usually took place at Lewes FC – but for the 15th Anniversary, Brighton kindly hosted it at the AMEX. Just in case that didn’t sufficiently up the ante, Andrew Johnson and Shaun Derry agreed to turn out for the Palace XI in front of a 1,042-strong crowd.

Despite the charitable association, the fixture itself was always hot-blooded. In the first half, quite simply, we shat the bad. Brighton wanted it more. We went into the break 0-2 down, and second best all over the pitch.

A film crew was on hand to record the occasion. Gaffer @benjameslong81 gave a half-time speech, then asked Derry if he had anything to add.

‘Dez’ told the crew to switch off the camera…

… then read us the riot act.

Seriously, getting a team-wide bollocking from a guy who’d skippered Leeds, Palace and QPR, and recently managed Notts County, was one of most inspiring experiences of my life.

After three minutes animatedly pointing out where we were going wrong in every area of the park, we went out for the second half ready to run through walls – and steamrollered our hosts, and greatest rivals, in the process.

AJ scored twice, 0-2 turned to 3-2 with five minutes remaining, and the celebrations were utterly glorious.

I still think of Dez’s words around the 14K mark of every half-marathon.

“You’re here. You’re in your fucking kit. If you’re not gonna fucking run until there’s nothing left in your fucking legs, why the fuck have you turned up in the fucking first place?”

Thank you @cpfc @eze (plus @thom_dorke and @charlie.thomas) for this.

Grandad would be so proud that a man with not just Ebere’s talent, but his humbleness and all-around personality, wore his shirt on such a special occasion.

Unforgettable.
