This was my first time attending an @indies_nyc event and I think it might be the best watch event I've been to so far.

These are some of the watches other attendees brought with them, and they're all incredible.

Highlights for me include the 1 of 3 @laurent_ferrier in red with a white subdial which I was told was inspired by automotive racing, the @simon_brette_watches on that insane bracelet, a Breguet belonging to @andrew_morgan_watches, the Otsuka Lotec type 8, the @fleming, the @dominique.renaud, that @anomawatch, the @grandseikousa, and that person wearing the new tiny @blancpain1735 directly next to a @panerai

So I guess everything was a highlight 😂

ever seen a redwood seedling? 🌱 they certainly don’t become giants overnight, but speaking of which, recently enjoyed a little forest bathing with the incredible @fleming series 1 mkii ‘redwood’ – maybe one of the most ambitious, detail-rich designs I’ve ever had the chance to shoot 🌲🌲

One day I will be faster. Efficient. Technical.
With a full-time job, a family, I squeeze every available minute to work on my shoots. And I think that because time is so scarce, I appreciate it more. Little by little, I can close my eyes and paint most of the watches I’ve shot back in my head.

Congrats to my friends at Fleming for launching their second watch. I got to see a prototype of this Mark II a while ago and I was impressed by the new updates. This is still the best tantalum case on the market due to its intricate polishing and skeletonized lugs. But now the movement has more angles with better finishing, and the dial is more creative and unique. I own a couple watches with vertically brushed dials so I already dig this kind of look. Yet I’ve never seen a brushed dial (already known for being quite chameleon-like depending on the angle) combined with so many three-dimensional black-polished details. It results in cool ways light bounce off different surfaces of the dial. This is a very contemporary and cool take on a sector dial.

Even before we launched @fleming’s debut release a little over two years ago, @thomasafleming and I began dreaming about its follow-up, and we’re proud to present it today: the Series 1 Mark II. As before, this watch comes in multiple variants: 5N rose gold, which we’re calling the Redwood, and tantalum, nicknamed the Pacific, with color palettes inspired by the nature around @thomasafleming’s home base in California.

This is a watch that wouldn’t have been possible without its predecessor: we took everything we liked from the Series 1 Launch Edition and refined and pushed it further, including redesigning and opening up the bridges, designing new, all-custom and beveled wheels, and creating a distinct look for each variant that extends to the movement side.

As a watch photographer, I have an unhealthy obsession with observing how the different surfaces of a watch interact with light, and part of our mission was to design a watch where every surface changes with light in different, interesting ways but comes together to form a cohesive and dynamic whole. To that end, we also rethought the dial, taking one of my favorite details of our case - the alternating brushed and polished rings that encircle the midcase - and transposing it, creating a modern-feeling sector dial with a twist: a raised ring comprised of six individually black-polished and applied segments that flicker in and out depending on the ambient lighting and angle of view (swipe to see a few videos). We pair this with a circular brushed outer ring and a center that’s vertically brushed to give it a wide range between light or dark, subdued or colorful - meaning the dial can take on a markedly different personality with a turn of the wrist.

We’re making 25 pieces of each variant, and as before, we wouldn’t have been able to achieve any of this without the help of some of the best partners we could find in Switzerland - including but certainly not limited to @chronode.ch, @efteor.sa, @manufactor_sa, @fabrika_sa, and (outside of Switzerland) @jeanrousseaunyc and @jeanrousseauparis.

I’ve been fortunate to have my good friend Gareth Moon follow me around the world for the past few years, quietly documenting the chaos. His grace and wisdom have made him something of a mentor, especially when it comes to balancing my overenthusiasm and obsession.

It was only two and a half years ago, over a drink in Bondi, that we were scrolling through font designs before SUB13 went live. He’s been there for it all, and as I get ready for my Leica Gallery showing in New York, @mrgmoon has put together a short clip from some of that journey.

Hopefully this gives a glimpse into what drives me.
