A raised planter at the front of this contemporary Washington, D.C. residence features a pairing of two resilient plants: NewGen Independence® Boxwood and Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pensylvanica).

Developed by @saundersbrothersnursery in Piney River, Virginia, NewGen Independence® emerged from years of rigorous research and testing following the arrival of Boxwood Blight in the U.S. in 2011. Bred for exceptional resistance to both blight and Boxwood Leafminer, it provides structured, lasting greenery.

Beneath the boxwoods, Pennsylvania Sedge offers a soft, fine-textured contrast. Native to eastern and central North America, this semi-evergreen perennial spreads slowly via rhizomes to form a dense, weed-suppressing ground cover, creating a lush grass-like carpet.

Natural light, views of the surrounding trees, and a sense of privacy shaped the spaces throughout the home. Upstairs, the primary suite offers a more intimate, restful retreat.

A new-construction project, start to finish. See Part One on our grid.

There’s something to be said for putting a little distance between you and the rest of the house. A primary suite should feel connected, but private. ✨
In our Mt. Vernon project, the bedroom, dressing room and bath come together as a series of spaces designed to make the everyday routine feel a little more considered. And really, who doesn’t want a space in the house that feels entirely their own?

Secondary Bathrooms - Part 1
The sloped ceiling in this bath could have been wasted awkward space. Instead it became the vanity wall. :)

Instead of fighting the slope or trying to work around it, we built the custom vanity right into it. I chose to design delicate custom shelving with a bead detail on the opposite side to add some extra interest and compliment the refined look of this room.

Color: soft warm gray cabinetry with a Carrara marble top. The gray keeps it calm, the consistent diagonal veining in the marble adds some visual texture and keeps it clean and classic.

Pairing: gray cabinetry plus white/light gray basketweave marble tile with a little black. The thin black-framed mirror and the black dots in the basketweave mosaic floor keep the soft color palette from feeling too washed out.

The backsplash is curved on the ends to step softly down to meet the side splashes and reads as one continuous piece. The niche and shelves are built into the wall space so toiletries can be tucked away and the counter stays clear. The bathroom’s location in the home (and location in the exterior elevation) made this a great spot for an accent window with diamond muntin bars.

A lot of thought went into this secondary bath design to get everything to work together. We leaned into this asymmetrical space and this is the result.

The black accents were the debate in this bath. Would you have added the small touches of black, or kept the colors all muted?

Classic Kitchen Series — Part 2
Here’s the whole kitchen, all together in one view.

Step back and look at the wall symmetry first. The range wall is built to be symmetrical. We have the hood in the center, windows flanking it, custom cabinetry balancing the wall. I always think that symmetry matters in design because it gives your eye a place to rest. It helps a room feel settled, not busy. We used the back wall to add our touch of symmetry to anchor this backdrop.

The diamond muntin bars were a deliberate choice. We loved how the pattern changes the light as it enters the room, and how it gives this room its signature mark, without shouting. It’s effortless, natural, and part of the backdrop.

The most underrated detail is the feel of a room that comes from the space you have to walk around. It’s a balance of cabinetry to walking space and the scale of the room. We love having over 42” for walking clearance and more for working areas or high traffic spaces. Here we have 49” on the right of the island, 44” at the range side, and 42” at the left of the island. Those clearances were carefully planned for both appearance and usability.

That’s what I aimed for in this kitchen design. It is warm, thought through, and not busy. There are no details trying to steal the show. A beautiful room that is still down to earth allows for a kitchen that you can live in and work in comfortably.

Part 3 is a Reel with a walk through. I’ll show you how those clearances actually feel to walk through. It will also include more quiet details in this kitchen I haven’t shared yet.

This home stood out as warm, inviting, and full of character before a single piece of furniture arrived.

Not because any one room was the showpiece, but because every space had its own personality that told a part of the story.

Every space was designed to feel cohesive, with the same quality throughout. Regardless of the room, whether it is the kitchen, primary bath, pantry, laundry, powder room, mudroom, each was given the same care and attention. Cabinetry adorns each room like furniture. Marble became a part of the architecture. The finishes were chosen to patina and grow more beautiful with everyday life. Nothing in this home was finished like a secondary space.

After going under contract early, the home we designed and built is now complete. We look forward to sharing highlights of our work in the weeks to come.

Grateful to @thorsen_construction for bringing this home to life, to @stofferhomecabinetry and @jeanstofferdesign for your incredibly beautiful cabinetry that gave so many of these rooms their identity, and to @jrichardsonla for designing a beautiful exterior landscape that no one could imagine would be possible.

Thank you @hrlspartners for connecting me with the best clients ever. 💙

Classic Kitchen Series — Part 1
Look closer at this kitchen design. The Calacatta Gold marble gets the attention, but the quiet details are what make this custom kitchen stand out.

I chose warm off-white uppers with the darkest stain I could go with that still allowed the white oak grain to show through. The island reads as furniture, not just more cabinetry. I paired Calacatta Gold with white oak and unlacquered brass. Marble adds in a natural and organic feel, brass keeps it warm, oak is adding character.

We like to add something personal to each room:
The hood is built as custom cabinetry, with a thin aged brass rail. We designed it to disappear into the wall without missing an opportunity to leave its mark. It reads as soft to the eye as the stainless steel Lacanche range. The shelf rail adds back something to still catch your eye.

While the island sits on the floor, the appearance was designed to help it look like furniture. The rounded shelf is off to one side. This long end looks like a shelf with the brass-capped legs. Also, the wood panel that meets the floor is trimmed to give the appearance of table legs. A typical island that may have a toe kick all around or a visible overhang for the bar stools. We enclosed ours to add that special custom touch.

In each room, we try hard to define ways to add personality. In this kitchen, one way we accomplished this was by building parts of it to look like furniture.

Two distinct visions for a timeless Virginia farmhouse set on 5 acres in Warrenton.

In Plan A, the pool runs parallel to the house to establish a broad water horizon towards the fireplace lounge, featuring a centered spa and balanced lounge seating.

In Plan B, the pool rotates 90 degrees, with the lounges on one side mirroring the spa on the other, positioned beside the fireplace lounge.

Which spatial flow would you choose?

Study season. 📚Studies give us an opportunity to create a space that feels a little more intimate. Rich materials, thoughtful millwork and warm wood ceilings make a study feel collected, while large windows keep it connected to the landscape beyond - as seen in @annapolishomemagazine!

Are banquettes still a controversial thing? Because I’ve designed about 6 of them this past year, and I love them in just about any room in the house. Living room, dining room, breakfast nook, they just make a room feel extra warm and inviting 🌤️

Modern design with a thoughtful purpose.

Recently completed in DC, this contemporary residence was designed to bring generations together while preserving their independence. A separate mother-in-law suite offers privacy and autonomy, while a seamless connection to the main residence keeps family close.

Two distinct living spaces, thoughtfully connected as one home.
