THE HUMAN ARCHIVE FOOTPRINT | 001

On the things we carry, and the things that carry us.

Ummi Umar is holding a phone.

I know her as one of my favourite girls in Durumi. I know she has an eye for photography, and we have told that story before. Today, I find myself wondering what she sees when she looks through a camera.

Does she notice the things the rest of us walk past? The way light settles on a face. The tenderness in an ordinary afternoon. The beauty of someone who has no idea they are being observed.

I wonder because I am learning that paying attention is a kind of love.

The longer I spend documenting lives, the more I realise that the camera is not always pointing in the direction we think it is. Sometimes, we arrive believing we are there to witness another person’s life, only to discover that their life has been quietly teaching us how to see our own.

Ummi is not just a girl in a photograph. She is a person with an imagination, a gaze, and a future that cannot be contained by the circumstances in which I met her.

I hope she gets to keep looking. To learn, to practise, to tell stories in her own way. I hope the world gives her more than moments to photograph; I hope it gives her the room to become the person behind the camera.

I do not know what the future holds for Ummi. I only know that I am glad to have witnessed a little part of her present.

Perhaps that is what documenting lives has been teaching me: we do not have to know the ending of a person’s story to honour the page they are on.

How many futures are we looking at without recognising them? How many gifts are growing quietly in places the world has learned to overlook?

Some photographs preserve a moment. Others remind us that a life is still unfolding.

What does it take to build sustainable movements in a world where young people are organising, protesting, and demanding political change?

Still basking in the euphoria of last week’s @boellstiftung Young Advocates for Democracy (YA4D) convening. Now that I am well rested, let me share a little of this experience that has healed and replenished me.

From finally meeting @sawe262 (YA4D project coordinator) who embodied feminist hand-holding throughout our engagements, to learning from Anna Fleischer, Head of the Global Unit for Democracy and Human Rights at @boell_eu, I was reminded of the power of intentional leadership, empathy, and lived experience as development practitioners and feminist leaders.

Being part of a network of exceptional activists, researchers, and movement builders from across the world is an opportunity that arrived at the perfect moment.

Beyond the personal connections, I led the delivery of an international workshop on Gen Z movements for over 35 participants from 10 countries. Drawing on the Gen Z: Voices of a Global Generation dossier, I designed the workshop methodology and facilitated participatory sessions across four thematic areas:

• Climate Justice
• Digital Organising and Technology
• Democracy, Protest and Political Participation
• Gen Z and Feminist Movements

I worked with seven dossier authors representing Nepal, Madagascar, Lebanon, Nigeria, Guatemala, and South Africa, alongside perspectives spanning Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This involved managing logistics, and end-to-end workshop delivery in partnership with the YA4D project team and steering committee.

A big shout-out to the steering committee, our wellness expert, the strategy consultant, @ela_jo, and our very own @lovethliberty for supporting the project team in designing and delivering this stellar event. Special thanks to C.I. Atumah for curating a memorable film screening and post-screening conversation.

The best development spaces do more than exchange knowledge. They create the conditions for people to learn, build relationships, and imagine what becomes possible when we work together.

Official photographs are coming soon; so much beauty to share. ❤️

In celebration of World Mental Health Day, we partnered with @thoughtpyramidabuja to remind everyone to check in on themselves and those around them. Vybecheck is all about healing and connection, and today we take a moment to reflect on our mental well-being. Let’s create spaces for expression, connection, and support. Reach out to someone today—you never know how much it might mean to them.

When art speaks, music connects, and emotions find expression, something beautiful happens.

Through Beyond the Silence, we brought art, music, and wellbeing together to create a meaningful experience of reflection, connection, and inspiration in recognition of World Mental Health Day. These captured moments tell the story of an experience that reminds us that mental health deserves more than a conversation; it deserves continuous care, understanding, and action.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the management of @thoughtpyramidabuja for providing a creative space where artistic expression, human emotions, and mental wellbeing could meet. Your support helped bring this meaningful vision to life, demonstrating how art can inspire dialogue, build connections, and encourage a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

COMING SOON ON YOUTUBE!

Beyond the Silence is more than a moment; it is an ongoing movement.

The journey towards sustainable mental health doesn't end with World Mental Health Day. It lives on in our everyday conversations, our compassion for others, our willingness to listen, and our commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and understood.

At Thought Pyramid Art Gallery, we celebrate the transformative power of art, not only to inspire the eye, but also to touch the heart and nurture the mind.

Let's keep creating. Let's keep connecting. Let's keep breaking the silence.

Sometimes the thoughts and heavy experiences inside us are too deep for words, and creating is the only true way I know how to let them out. Every layer of thread on this canvas is a physical release of emotion, turning what’s trapped in my head into something real and alive. 🎨🧵#africanart #johnakandouglas #textileart #nigeriaartist #contemporaryart
