Something a bit different today for @thistooisholy’s September #ThePoetryExchangeTTIS. The first poem I wrote for this prompt was much heavier and is still growing, so I opted for something more whimsical this time. Hope you like it, Gillian ☺️

Full Poem—
The Eye Award
I know I only have thirty seconds, but
I would like to thank God, my family and
these two incredible, tireless
eyes.

They read the bills, the back of a cereal box
again,
watch water until it boils,
except when making a sauce.
They find the keys in the pocket-dump dish,
or at times, the refrigerator.
They check the date on the milk,
then pass it to the nose,
refuse
in utter damnation
to look away from a fleck of pepper
stuck between teeth,
then immediately run judgment
upstairs.

They scan
medication warnings,
my mother’s face
for a tiredness she won’t mention,
the doctor’s lips
pressed thin—

how absurdly aseptic
this room insists on being.

By evening,
even the slightest sound
has a shadow, and a moth
looks like paperwork.

So I shall give them
a window

and a peach on the sill
with its ridiculous little pink fuzz.

SEW UP MY WOUNDS:

I tried to sew up my wounds before they were done bleeding.
I stopped looking for you in places we'd been.
Funny how a life can fall apart over things no one else even notices.
The ache was still there, waiting for one careless memory to find it.
🔸
The fabric holds fast.
The hands that stitched it still shake.
Winter left its mark.
I wear my mended heart loose,
so it can breathe without you.

Sew up my wounds with the thread of hope,
Let the resilient being needled into my being,
With the better hope of tomorrow,
Let it all flow into my veins, Like a magic elixir,
Mixing with my scarlet heart,
The vermilion fibre of my tissue,
Hold no memory whatsoever,
Of a yester,
I leave the bygones for a brighter tomorrow!

Wounded by many hands and words
Where safety was preferred
Careless speech and slandering
That their communication was wandering
Down paths of lies and laceration
Quick with no hesitation
You fell for their disillusionment
You were hell bent
On destruction
Now you have to make the correction
Sew up my wounds and apply the balm
Forgiveness restores the calm.

dear falling first
the names dissolving last
