A couple more magnums to share before the Hawke’s Bay Wine Auction on Saturday.

We started working with Gordon Russell, then at Esk Valley, on Chenin Blanc from the 2019 vintage onwards. With the different conditions of each vintage and experience, you start accumulating ideas - while we kept incorporating these until Gordon left Esk in 2023, we really felt like we still had unfinished business!

Holly, Casey and Hester of @threefateswine are one of the faces of the next generation of wine businesses that have started in Hawke’s Bay over the last few years - it’s now a vibrant, colourful scene with an injection of new ideas. Holly Given Russell is a second generation winemaker, following on from her father Gordon.

In 2024 we collectively decided to combine that youthful enthusiasm with Gordon’s experience (35 vintages in Hawke’s Bay, most including Chenin) in the Three Fates Gordon Russell collaboration! The 2024 vintage exceeded the wildest expectations, and the 2025 vintage is another great one with the incorporation of “The Golden Slope,” a collection of 200 bush vines on the bank in front of the house. An amazing opportunity this week to look at the versatility of Albariño when it’s paired with different food. Stephen Wong MW and Leah Kirkland took the Albariño masterclass, taking participants through the wines on their own, before workshopping how different dishes from the @onslow.nz and @giltbrasserie menus influence the wines when tasted together. The theory around how and why that happens was fascinating, and we all walked away with some new knowledge and inspiration on the place for Albariño with food.

Thanks to everyone that came the Two Terraces trade and media tasting - we really enjoyed all of the discussion and collaboration that occurred during the day (and across the different masterclasses).

We tasted eight different Albariño’s off the vineyard, looking at the individual nuances of each. There were some interesting parallels between some of the discussions on flavour that really lined up with some of the decisions around picking and some of the early decisions made in the winery - we’ll have to explore that more!

What a day at Onslow @twoterracesvineyard
Popped along to the Two Terraces Annual Tasting today. 13 wineries, all working with fruit from the one vineyard in Mangatahi, Hawke’s Bay. Same vineyard, 13 different takes. Pretty cool to taste side by side.
Great line-up - had a yarn with a few of the winemakers, checked out the soil station, tasted through Chardonnay, Chenin, Gamay, Albariño and more.

Good people, great wines, and lots to bring back to the shop.
Cheers to everyone who put it on.

My business card reads, Wine tours, Masterclasses and Consulting. On Wednesday evening with a full Central Fire Station restaurant of passionate food and wine lovers it was on with the Masterclass hat. Showcasing a selection of wines I have made spanning three decades, matched with some culinary genius from Sam and his team, it was a night to remember. The fact that a number of menu ingredients came from Pia and my garden made it even more memorable. What a way to spend the coldest night of the year. Thanks to all who braved the cold.

We invited you to celebrate 10 years of Francie knits at our Auckland studio; and it was so beautiful. A decade ago I could hardly dream Francie would look like this and be surrounded by so many wonderful people I’ve got to meet along the way. Cup is full. We’re bringing the Two Terraces Grower Vineyard story (and wines) to the Melbourne Trade!

We will host a masterclass sharing the background to the Two Terraces vineyard in Te Matau-a-Māui, Hawke’s Bay, supported with flights of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, and followed by a walk around tasting of some of New Zealand’s most exciting producers making wine from the vineyard.
