Welcome to The Yard!

That’s right, now let’s keep this same energy at the polls! ✊🏽

What started as a parking dispute near Huston-Tillotson University in Austin turned into an unexpected gathering as HBCU students and members of the Black Austin community showed up with food, music and cookout energy. After one of the women involved reportedly declared, “THIS IS OUR NEIGHBORHOOD,” the community response turned the moment into what looked like an early homecoming pregame protest.

But the situation went beyond parking. In the video, the women also took digs at Huston-Tillotson by bringing up the university’s graduation rate, turning a neighborhood disagreement into a jab at an institution with a long history of expanding educational opportunities for Black students.

HBCUs are more than campuses. They are pillars of education, culture and community, and conversations about their future deserve to go beyond stereotypes or using student outcomes as an insult.

That same community energy matters during election season, too. Decisions made by elected officials can affect higher education funding, student resources and the neighborhoods surrounding our campuses. Staying informed about those decisions is part of understanding how our communities are shaped.

The cookout brought the energy. Now, let’s keep that awareness going beyond the block and into the conversations that shape our future.

Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul brought pure Houston energy to the Labor Day Classic stands, performing a heavy-hitting rendition of Kirko Bangz’s hit song “Drank In My Cup”! The performance went so viral it caught the attention of Kirko Bangz himself, who co-signed the performance on X. 🔥🌟

Nothing beats seeing our favorite artists tap into HBCU culture and give student musicians their flowers for holding down the city’s anthem. Showing love to the creators who define our sound is what it means to #showout and keep our culture thriving! 🤎💯

Fun Fact: Did you know Kirko Bangz actually attended Prairie View A&M University before taking off in his music career? 👀💜💛

When student-athletes feel like their voices aren’t being heard, they take it straight to the top! 🗣️

On day two of the fall semester, Texas Southern University men’s basketball players, students, and alumni marched across campus to protest outside President James W. Crawford III’s office ahead of a crucial Board of Regents vote. The players are making their stance crystal clear: they want interim head coach Shyrone Chatman to lead the program after spending the entire offseason recruiting, building chemistry, and holding the team together following Johnny Jones’ departure to coach at LSU.

With classes already underway and the season approaching, TxSU players are #FedUp with leadership decisions being made over their heads that disrupt program stability, player retention, and team chemistry. Student-athletes are expressing how they are being put in an unfair position with a new coaching staff potentially coming in after players have already committed and arrived on campus. 👀

TxSU student-athletes are not afraid to show up and speak their mind, proving that Gen Z activism is alive and well on the Yard. 💯🏀
