Versatility! 🎺

One thing about HBCU bands... they’re going to keep you on your toes.

This throwback of Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul performing Selena’s iconic hit “Como La Flor” is proof that great musicians don’t stay in one lane. While they’re known for bringing unmatched energy to the stands and field, moments like these showcase the incredible versatility that makes HBCU band culture so special.

From R&B and hip-hop to gospel, jazz, Latin classics, and everything in between, HBCU bands have a unique ability to honor different genres while making every song their own. That’s what keeps fans coming back year after year. You never know what they’ll play next.

The Ocean of Soul understood the assignment, and this performance is still a fan favorite years later. A timeless song, a legendary band, and a reminder that great music has no boundaries.

Did they do Selena justice? We want to hear what y’all think! 👀👇🏾

The Panthers have a coinnnn! This is fancy! 😭🐾✨

Prairie View A&M said Homecoming deserves the royal treatment, and that light show has the Hilltop looking GOOD!

But while the drones are lighting up the sky, let’s talk about what’s happening down here on the ground. Because as much as everybody loves a little luxury, Texans are still trying to figure out why groceries, rent, gas, and everyday essentials are costing so much. That Homecoming outfit was already expensive enough, now the food prices want to be part of the fit too? 😭

And with Election Day approaching in Texas, affordability is one of the issues worth keeping an eye on. Local and state decisions can affect everything from housing and transportation to education funding and the cost of living. Staying informed about the candidates, their policies, and what’s on your ballot is one way to understand how those decisions may affect your community.

Enjoy the lights, celebrate the Panthers, and keep the same energy when it comes to knowing what’s happening beyond the Hilltop. Because the Panthers may have a coin, but the rest of us are still checking our bank accounts before we check out. 💸

Idk, they’re saying Prairie View A&M has the best homecoming in Texas? 👀🐾

It’s officially Homecoming Week on the Hilltop, and Prairie View A&M is getting ready to show out! From the Panther Pride to the band, the Greeks, the tailgates, the alumni, and the energy that takes over the entire campus, PVAMU Homecoming is a tradition that speaks for itself.

Every year, HBCU homecomings bring their own flavor, and Texas has no shortage of schools that know how to put on a show. But with the Panthers getting ready to welcome everyone back to the Hill, the question has to be asked: does Prairie View have the best Homecoming in Texas? The Purple and Gold might have something to say about that!

Now, this isn’t just about the party. It’s about the culture, the memories, the school pride, and the generations of Panthers who come back to celebrate what makes Prairie View special.

Panthers, it’s your time to defend the Hilltop! And to the rest of Texas HBCU Nation, we want to hear from you. Which Texas HBCU has the BEST Homecoming? 👀

That’s right, now let’s keep this same energy at the polls, Texas!

What started as a parking dispute near Huston-Tillotson University in Austin turned into an unexpected gathering as HBCU students and members of the Black Austin community showed up with food, music and cookout energy. After one of the women involved reportedly declared, “THIS IS OUR NEIGHBORHOOD,” the community response turned the moment into what looked like an early homecoming pregame protest.

But the situation went beyond a parking dispute. In the video, the women also took digs at Huston-Tillotson by bringing up the university’s graduation rate, turning a neighborhood disagreement into a jab at an institution with a long history of expanding educational opportunities for Black Texans.

From Huston-Tillotson in Austin to Texas Southern in Houston and Prairie View A&M, Texas HBCUs are pillars of education, culture and community. Conversations about their future deserve to go beyond stereotypes or using student outcomes as an insult.

And that same community energy matters during election season. Decisions made by elected officials can affect higher education funding, student resources, housing and the neighborhoods surrounding our campuses. Staying informed about those decisions is part of understanding how Texas communities are shaped.

The cookout brought the energy. Now, let’s keep that awareness going beyond the block and into the conversations that shape Texas’s future.

Only one Christopher and one Ocean deserve the spotlight! 🌊🐯❤️

Forget sailing the ocean blue in 1492. This throwback features Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul bringing the heat with a performance of “Sky’s the Limit” by the legendary Christopher “Biggie” Smalls!

There’s nothing like hearing a hip-hop classic get the HBCU band treatment. From the powerful brass to the drums and the energy that comes with every note, the Ocean of Soul knows how to take a record that generations already love and give it a whole new life. Biggie’s music continues to resonate across generations, and performances like this highlight just how deeply hip-hop is woven into Black music, culture and HBCU traditions.

And when the Ocean of Soul takes on a song titled “Sky’s the Limit,” the name speaks for itself. With its signature sound and unmistakable Tiger pride, TSU’s band continues to represent Texas Southern University and showcase the creativity, talent and excellence that make HBCU band culture so special.

So while Christopher Columbus may be the name attached to October 12, this throwback is dedicated to Christopher “Biggie” Smalls and Texas Southern’s Ocean of Soul. One Christopher made the history books, but the other left a legacy that continues to live through the music. 🎺🥁

The type of music that has to come on when the little boo isn’t registered to vote. 🎶

Because being boo’d up on the Hill, planning homecoming fits and getting ready to pop out is all fun and games until election season rolls around and voter registration is nowhere in the conversation!

Texas HBCU culture is about more than the bands, the classics, the homecoming traditions and the school pride. It is also connected to the policies and decisions that shape the future of these institutions and the communities surrounding them.

From Texas Southern University in Houston’s Third Ward to Prairie View A&M University, decisions about state budgets and higher education funding can affect campus facilities, academic programs, student resources and educational opportunities. Understanding how these decisions are made, who is responsible for them and how public funding is allocated is part of understanding the challenges HBCUs face.

Underfunding is not just a number on a budget sheet. It can have real implications for the resources available to students and the long-term growth of institutions that have educated generations of Black leaders.

That is why voter registration and civic awareness matter. Elections determine who represents communities and makes decisions on issues such as education, public funding and economic opportunity. Voting is one way to participate in that process, and staying informed helps people better understand what is at stake.

The homecoming fits can be planned, the group chats can stay active and the boo can still be boo’d. But understanding the issues affecting Texas HBCUs deserves a place in the conversation, too.

The more we know, the more we understand. And understanding the issues is part of understanding #OurPower.

POV: She’s a Texas Southern girl, so the maroon and gray run through her veins. ❤️

There’s just something about a TSU girl that speaks for itself! From the moment she steps on the yard to the sound of the Ocean of Soul, she carries that Tiger pride everywhere she goes. The confidence, the culture, the sisterhood, the friendships, the homecoming fits, the classics and the memories made in the heart of Third Ward all come together to create an experience that’s bigger than just attending college.

Being a Texas Southern girl means representing a legacy rooted in Houston, surrounded by generations of Tigers who understand what it means to call TSU home. It’s showing up for the school, celebrating the traditions, making lifelong connections and creating memories that will have you saying, “You just had to be there!” years later.

And let’s be honest, when homecoming season rolls around, that Tiger pride hits a little differently. From getting dressed for the occasion to seeing familiar faces on the yard, some things will always feel like home. Because no matter where life takes her after graduation, a piece of her will always belong to TSU.

Third Ward made, Tiger pride forever. Once a Texas Southern girl, always a Texas Southern girl! ❤️

Everyone’s always ready for tailgates on the Yard and halftime shows with the band, but no one talks about getting ready to vote in November. Real HBCU pride doesn’t just stop at the end zone.

There are several issues students deal with every single day including increased tuition, rent costs, campus safety, and infrastructure funding, which are decided by elected officials and local policy decisions. Staying engaged and making sure your voice is heard at the ballot box is how we protect our culture, our universities, and our futures.

Our institutions and local communities need us at the polls. Whether you’re voting early in person or by mail, it’s important that you make your voice heard. We stay undefeated when we show up at the ballot box! 🗳️

POV: Texas politics pulled up to the HBCU function. 👀

If you’ve been on Texas HBCU social media lately, you’ve probably seen James Talarico’s name pop up a few times.

The Texas State Representative and Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate has been making appearances at HBCU events across the state, including the State Fair Classic between Prairie View A&M and Grambling State. He met with students, alumni, university leaders and Prairie View’s Royal Court during the weekend.

But here’s the bigger picture:

Texas HBCUs and politics have been connected LONG before this election cycle.

From Prairie View and Texas Southern to Huston-Tillotson, Wiley College and Paul Quinn, Texas HBCUs have been spaces where education, culture, community organizing and civic life have crossed paths for generations.

So when political candidates start showing up on the yard, at classics, homecomings and campus events, it becomes part of a much bigger conversation about the relationship between Texas politics and the institutions that have educated and organized generations of Black Texans.

And Talarico’s current campaign has made HBCU and Black community outreach a visible part of his run for the U.S. Senate. The election is set for November 3, 2026.

HBCUs have always been part of the Texas political story. The question is what that relationship looks like in 2026. 👀

Throwing it back to Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul doing what they do best: taking a classic and making it their own. 🐯🎺🥁

Here’s the Ocean of Soul performing Freddie Jackson’s “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” bringing that unmistakable TSU sound and HBCU band energy to one of R&B’s timeless records.

There’s something special about hearing a song originally built around smooth vocals and soulful melodies transformed through a marching band. The brass, the percussion, the arrangement and the energy from the band turn the performance into a completely different experience while still honoring the original.

The Ocean of Soul has always had a way of making R&B feel right at home on the yard. From classic soul to contemporary hits, TSU’s band continues the HBCU tradition of using music to create moments that people remember long after the performance ends.

And today, this performance hits a little differently as we remember Freddie Jackson, who passed away at 69. His music continues to live on through the artists, bands and generations that keep playing it.

So today’s throwback is for the Ocean of Soul, TSU and the music that keeps bringing generations together.

Rest in power, Freddie Jackson. 🎶

College sports are changing again, and HBCU athletes need to be part of the conversation.

HBCU athletes have always played a pivotal role in shaping sports, but their contributions are not always recognized, represented, or valued the way they should be. From football and basketball to track and field, HBCU athletes continue to produce talent, build legacies, and influence the culture of college sports.

Now, the Senate has passed legislation that would create a national framework for college athletics, including rules surrounding NIL, athlete compensation, eligibility, transfers, and revenue sharing.

For HBCU athletes, including those competing at schools across #Texas, these changes could have real implications for how opportunities, compensation, and protections are structured.

This conversation matters because HBCUs have historically provided opportunities for Black athletes to develop their talents and compete at the highest levels. Yet, the athletes coming through these programs can still face challenges when it comes to visibility, resources, recognition, and access to the same opportunities available elsewhere in college sports.

As the conversation around NIL and the future of college athletics continues, it is important to understand what is being proposed, who would have the authority to set the rules, and how those changes could affect athletes across HBCU campuses.

HBCU athletes have always been a major part of the sports story. They deserve to be recognized in the conversation about where college sports go next.
