The “_______, In Exile: Narratives of Resistance Hong Kong Fundraiser” is a film, culture and food festival taking place in Hong Kong this weekend that aims to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Palestine and the affected Levant region. By placing Levantine voices at the centre, it counters oversimplified narratives that paint the people from the region as either helpless victims or aggressive terrorists

Combining film screenings with culture and food workshops and fundraising for grassroots aid initiatives in Gaza, the festival encourages empathy, curiosity and real-world solidarity. Most of the films on show are by Palestinian-Danish director Mahdi Fleifel, offering intimate windows into life under occupation and displacement. And the screenings are complemented by hands-on experiences: a tile paint workshop by @makedusi.hk, @tilediaries and @spyishyyyyyyy, a tatreez embroidery session introduced by @thobnah, a cooking class with a chef from @grassrootsfuture, and a Levant-experience supperclub by @sapphireketchup and @yenskitchen.hk

Narratives of Resistance @nor.films encourages engagement with culture, craft and cuisine as acts of resilience and storytelling, and it arrives in Hong Kong after being staged earlier this year in cities including Bristol, Vienna, Toronto and Melbourne. O.cult talked to NOR founder Jey ahead of this weekend’s edition in Hong Kong about how the festival aims to soften indifference, expand perception, and cultivate a more nuanced, humane understanding of the people and cultures at the heart of the Levant

“_______, In Exile: Narratives of Resistance Hong Kong Fundraiser”, Sat, 12pm; Sun, 1pm, location upon registration. For ticketing details and a full rundown of the films, workshops and dining experiences, visit @nor.films

"Tile Tales: The Lives and After-Lives of Iconic Flooring", "seeks to archive tessera tiles in Hong Kong and encaustic tiles in Sindh, surfaces that have phased out in favour of other building material over recent decades but have been revived as cultural memorabilia."

It is a lovely, multi-layered publication. On its back and front are an array of different-sized, printed tiles in descending order. Which makes them all visible at once. The front is titled, "Tile Tales ٹائل ٹیلز, Pakistan پاکستان" and from the back begins, "Tile Tales 繁磚絮語, Hong Kong 香港". These sweet tile pages contain the following sections : Definition, Materials, Installation, and History of tessera tiles and encaustic tiles respectively. Inside, we have Cultural Significance of both tiles, and a section titled, "An introduction...and a meeting point of two design traditions".

In which it is written, "The province of Sindh and the city of Hong Kong-two locations that are seldom grouped together-form the basis of this size...", it says that both are: former British colonies and have ports which connect to the world of trade. "...In many ways, this zine is a new exploration of the cultural ties between Sindh and Hong Kong, and it also invites the myriad possibilities for comparing design traditions between other non-West locales in the future."

"The story we tell here is not only the story of these tiles as objects, but also of the whole ecosystem of people whose work underlies these important and overlooked crafts, and who continue to keep them alive and relevant unto the present moment."

DESIGN TRUST GRANT SPOTLIGHT: We are pleased to share that #DesignTrustSeedGrant research “Tile Tales: The Lives and Afterlives of Iconic Flooring” led by Fizza Qureshi, Stefan Luk and Willie Siau, will be debuting the research documentary and zine, with a panel discussion at ZINE YO! FEST supported by #DesignTrustSeedGrant on Sunday September 28th 4-6pm at Heath, Chungking Mansion. The documentary traces the stories of Sajjad Ullah Qureshi, a Sukkur-based tile manufacturer of over 50 years, and Mandy Wong, an urban planner who archives mosaic tiles in Hong Kong. It explores how tiling designs travel across cultures and their continued significance to the urban fabric. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring Design Trust grantees Fizza Qureshi and Stefan Luk, with Mandy Wong and moderated by Charis Poon.

由 Fizza Qureshi、Stefan Luk 及 Willie Siau 所帶領的信言設計大使種籽資助計劃研究「Tile Tales: The Lives and Afterlives of Iconic Flooring」將於本週日下午4-6時在信言設計大使種籽資助計劃項目ZINE YO! DESIGN TRUST GRANT SPOTLIGHT: #DesignTrustSeedGrant research “Tile Tales: The Lives and Afterlives of Iconic Flooring” led by Fizza Qureshi, Stefan Luk and Willie Siau archives tessera tiles in Hong Kong and encaustic tiles in Sindh, surfaces that have phased out in favour of other building material over recent decades but have been revived as cultural memorabilia. It explores the socio-political and economic conditions that led to their once widespread adoption as the building surfaces of choice in both places, and inquires into the more recent processes that have injected new cultural significance into the tiles. Through interviews with architecture scholars, craftsmen, factory owners, and conservationists, desk study of tiling traditions in Hong Kong and Pakistan, field visits, and archival research centering architecture magazines and historic advertisements, the team developed research zine and documentary to unfold the cultural tradition, design and manufacturing context of the tiling traditions in Sindh, Pakistan, and Hong Kong. Through chronicling the remaining tiles in both regions and documenting the stories and memories around them, the project ultimately investigates how design plays an integral role in the process of remembering and creating ‘identity artifacts.’

📚 Pioneer Book House “A Karachi Legacy Since 1945-2025”

This iconic bookstore was founded in 1945 by Inayat Hussain Dalal, a visionary and freedom fighter. He was the grandfather of Zafar Hussain Dalal, the current custodian of the shop and part of a family that has held this cultural space together for generations. From the early years of Pakistan to today, Pioneer Book House has remained a quiet sanctuary for independent thinkers, students, lawyers, artists, poets, and everyday readers.

Located in Sami Chambers, opposite Dow Medical College on M.A. Jinnah Road, it witnessed decades of Karachi’s changing political and social fabric. Over the years, people like Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, Asma Jahangir, Anita Ghulam Ali, and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Jr. have walked through its doors, some as patrons, some as defenders of free thought.

But now, this historic space is being vacated, not closed, as some say, but forcibly surrendered due to Karachi’s decaying pagri system and builder-led takeovers. The new owner of the building is selling shops at full market price or demanding unaffordable rent. Despite holding pagri rights, the Pioneer Book House was told to either accept a lump-sum amount or be locked and cemented out. With no other choice, the family took the payout. They are now transitioning to a small, shared vintage space, far from the street they helped shape.

This is not just a loss of walls, it’s the slow erasure of Karachi’s collective memory.

@barristermurtazawahab The Book House is gone, we lost that fight. But this building is still standing. Don’t let it become another concrete monster. Save what’s left. Karachi deserves at least one win.
“Jo qoum apni tareekh ko bhool jaati hai, tareekh usay bhool jaati hai.”
