Meet at Bantham Beach Cellar Door (horse box wine bar), dive into our estate 4x4. Escape the madding crowd and soak up the Avon Estuary.

Your first pour is in our quintessential English Walled Garden, a quiet corner of the world, to taste and spill more about the Bantham Estate.

Pour number two is the best view in the house, sitting next-door to our Pinot Noir.

Our finale pour is a soil to cellar experience and a toast to English wine.

175 cactus guards. A wool-carpeted hedge line. 700 trees.

One day at Hole Farm.

We assembled 175 Cactus guards on site, carpeted a new hedge line with woollen mat and pegged it down, then planted 700 trees along it.

Robbie Philips, ecologist, led the day for the Plymouth & South Devon Coastal Forest project on the Flete Estate.

The wool isn't decoration. It holds back grass and weeds through the first seasons when young trees are most vulnerable, breaks down into the soil, and replaces plastic membrane that would otherwise have to be lifted and binned.

Hedgerows provide shelter, food and corridors for everything from beetles to barn owls.

Six leaky dams, 1̶,̶0̶0̶0̶ ̶ 𝟑,𝟎𝟎𝟎 bulbs. We were fully channelling our inner beaver. 🦫

Over 1,000 wild daffodil and snowdrop bulbs went in at Bickham Farm.

Then six leaky dams, built by hand from willow and brash.

Each one slows the flow into the Avon, holding back winter spates, keeping soil on the land and the river clear, and creating the wet hollows that insects, amphibians and birds need.

Thank you to Bickham Farm for the warm welcome and delicious soup, and to Till the Coast is Clear for always organising such interesting places for us to volunteer at.

Hedge laying is hedge making. Cut the stems, fold them over, and a hedge grows back thicker than it ever was.

Two teams, one site, and both left something better behind.

One group opened up a large pond so light could reach the water again, then turned every cut branch into a dead hedge.

That's habitat: cover for amphibians, nesting birds, and everything small that needs to move unseen.

The other group learned hedge laying with Liza and Guy. Folding the stems over forces fresh growth from the base, so you get a dense, stock-proof, wildlife-rich hedge where there was a thin, gappy one.

And we were all powered by homemade biscuits & brownies, frrsh coffee and homemade soup at lunch time!

A different kind of volunteering day at Shadycombe Cemetery in Salcombe! 🌿

Force4Nature @tillcoastclear volunteers cleared barrow-loads of cuttings to form habitat piles, then prepared and raked the ground ready for wildflower-meadow seed. 🌼🐝

We worked alongside Tim, Salcombe Town Council's ranger, who shared his knowledge and the vision for this beautiful site. The hope is that it will inspire other councils to manage similar spaces with wildlife in mind.

Great teamwork, glorious sunshine and homemade biscuits to keep us going! ☀️🍪

Planting a tree is the easy part.
Keeping it alive in a cow meadow is the real job 😬

A wet, wind-driven day at Brook Manor on the edge of Dartmoor, fitting guards and
cages around newly planted native broadleaf saplings.

Unprotected, a young tree in grazed pasture rarely makes it. Deer browse the leading shoots, rabbits strip the bark at the base, and cattle will lean on anything that stands still!

A cage and a good mulch ring buys a sapling the five or six years it needs to get its head above the browse line. That's the difference between a planting scheme and an actual wood.

Horizontal rain, ten of us, and one of the most satisfying days we've had.
Soup and sourdough never tasted better 🥣

We've been coming to Brook Manor since 2022 — semi-ancient woodland, hay meadows, species-rich wet meadow.

Slow, unglamorous work. But the land is now home to breeding ospreys and goshawks, more pied flycatchers and bats, and a multitude of invertebrates and small mammals moving back through the meadows and woodland edge.

That order matters. Structure first, then insects, which feed the birds, then the
bigger predators follow.

You cannot install a goshawk. You can only build the habitat and wait 🌳

FREE Entertainment, FREE Coffee, Tea, Juice & Cake, FREE Activities, FREE Workshops and LOTS of aspects of Dartmouth to discover - from annual festivals and events to the environment and biodiversity - we have it ALL at our Regatta Community & Environmental Day on Saturday 22nd August.

Get down to join us from 10am with everything being underway from 11am in the Royal Avenue Gardens.

Come to see what’s going on, stay for the cake, and leave with a whole new appreciation for Dartmouth.

Our new Community & Environmental Day is a chance to experience the Regatta without needing to be a sailor, athlete or spectator. Bring the family and spend the day trying something new at a free workshop, meeting local community and environmental organisations, taking a FREE electric boat trip, enjoying FREE tea, coffee, cake and juice, meeting the animals with Animal HQ and joining Professor Bumble for some proper family fun.

Then, when you think the day is winding down, turn the music up and let the children dance the evening away at the FREE Children’s Disco until 8pm.

It’s free, family-friendly, environmentally minded and quintessentially Dartmouth — and because it is the inaugural Community & Environmental Day, there’s an extra reason to be there: you can be part of something new becoming part of the Regatta tradition.

Field Studies Council x Bantham Vineyard
@fscslaptonley, "First hand experiences in the outdoors."

Experiential education, science-led fieldwork and research, in an outdoor classroom.

Yesterday, in the great outdoors, a school of 16-18-year-olds turned their hands to technical calculations for harvest prep with phenology observations and analysis from the lag phase and onset of véraison.

Véraison is the physiological beginning of grape ripening, marked by berry softening, sugar accumulation, falling acidity and colouration.

Team names, cleverly invented with a suitably playful twist...

Great teamwork. They, also, lent a hand beach cleaning in collaboration with @tillcoastclear.

Good luck to them with their Duke of Edinburgh Award. They may well be rendezvousing back on our turf in October, for worm counts!
