Hedge laying is hedge making. Cut the stems, fold them over, and a hedge grows back thicker than it ever was.

Two teams, one site, and both left something better behind.

One group opened up a large pond so light could reach the water again, then turned every cut branch into a dead hedge.

That's habitat: cover for amphibians, nesting birds, and everything small that needs to move unseen.

The other group learned hedge laying with Liza and Guy. Folding the stems over forces fresh growth from the base, so you get a dense, stock-proof, wildlife-rich hedge where there was a thin, gappy one.

And we were all powered by homemade biscuits & brownies, frrsh coffee and homemade soup at lunch time!

Have you seen our new Crabbing Hut outside the front of the café?

We’ve teamed up with @tillcoastclear to make crabbing more sustainable this summer.

Our hut is filled with wooden reels & metal buckets that both work, and are much friendlier to the crabs and the environment!

Once finished, return the bucket to the hut and pop the reel in one of the recycling bins along the front, where Sarah kindly cleans them and returns them back to the hut for the next family.

🦀 Be kind to the crabs:

- Max 3 crabs per bucket, so they have space and plenty of oxygen
- Salt water only in the bucket
- Keep the bucket in the shade so that they don’t overheat
- Max 15 minutes in the bucket, then return them carefully to their home

Enjoy this summer and help us make crabbing more sustainable 💛 taken in Coastal Trail by @tillcoastclear

What a difference a day (and a dedicated team) makes!
Huge thanks to the incredible volunteers from Force 4 Nature who joined us yesterday to help get our social forestry area ready for an exciting new chapter.
We’re gearing up to launch a pilot project working alongside farmers to support their mental health and wellbeing and honestly, the site prep felt like a mountain to climb on our own. Some jobs are just too big for one or two people to tackle alone, and yesterday was a perfect reminder of that.
Thanks to Gary and his amazing crew, they knocked out in one day what would’ve taken us weeks. We can’t thank you enough for your energy, hard work, and belief in what we’re building.
Watch this space big things growing here.

Just had a brilliant morning working with Force 4 Nature volunteers at the @apricotcentre clearing up an old forest school site.

This volunteer team, which has been meeting since 2001, get together every Wednesday to work on land across South Devon and promote nature recovery by planting hedges, clearing weeds, and preparing ground for planting.

Today’s task saw us clear a site which will be partly used for a new mental health project for farmers. It was hard, hot work, but so important given how isolated many farmers feel.

It was strange doing this work on the same day Devon officially entered drought status and wildfires continued to burn in Europe. It was a reminder of the amazing work so many communities are doing to combat our changing climate.

Join us for a unique and uplifting community music workshop led by James Carr from Drum Devon, using plastic waste collected from the sea and provided by Till the Coast is Clear CIC.

Combining the powerful rhythms of West African djembes with creatively reused marine plastic waste, we’ll make instruments, play music and create a joyful community junk band together. This is a chance to get hands-on, connect with others, and turn ocean waste into something positive, energetic and inspiring!

No musical experience is needed — everyone is welcome.

#riversandmoorlandfestival

Rivers and Moorland Festival is part of Dartmoor’s Dynamic Landscapes. The 2026 festival was made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund and generous support from Arts Council England. The creative commissions were made possible with support from the Environment Agency and the Woodland Trust. by @tillcoastclear

Every Wednesday the Force4Nature volunteer team venture out to lend a helping hand to nature conservation & regeneration projects large & small across South Devon. We build leaky dams, plant trees, build habitat piles, erect bird & bat boxes & much more. It is incredible what is going on out there. There’s a quiet but powerful revolution going and we are privileged to be actively involved, visiting these beautiful places and being part of the march towards nature recovery. There is lots of really good stuff going on & it is a brilliant way to absorb the magic that nature instills in us all if we give it the chance. Huge thanks to our incredible volunteer team, our network of hospitable hosts & our remarkable sponsors & partners 👏🌳#southdevon #protectwhatyoulove #volunteer #nature #force4nature by @tillcoastclear

The good work continues in South Devon as it does all around the UK coast as more & more awesome folk recognise the need to get hands on with the seemingly ceaseless problem of plastic pollution blighting our coastline! Together we will get there, let’s all pick up plastic wherever we go & help get plastic out of nature, it’s not someone else’s problem or job, its up to all of us to make a difference, it’s just too beautiful & important to ignore. Huge thanks to all those who haul plastic above the high tide line for pick up and gratitude to all our partners who enable this work. What a privilege to be out on the water surrounded by nature on Sir David Attenborough’s birthday #southdevon #plasticpollution #protectwhatyoulove by @tillcoastclear

Another great coastal collaboration! Working with South Devon National Trust, Vudigital’s Positive Nature Network & Coastal Recycling alongside our awesome volunteers & other brilliant partners we were able to clear this spectacular & much loved South Devon beach of plastic pollution that’s been litter picked by visitors over the Winter. Thanks to everyone involved, it’s another win win! 👏😀 #southdevon #plasticpollution #protectwhatyoulove #peoplepower by @tillcoastclear

3.9 tons of plastic pollution recovered from the South Devon coast now moved from TTCIC HQ to Coastal Recycling’s resource recovery centre at Exeter for processing. An incredible effort from the volunteer team in foul weather enabled this and a massive shout out to Coastal Recycling ♻️ Exeter who have been by our sides since 2018 supporting this important work & huge gratitude to all of our volunteers, partners & sponsors for their continued support. Good things are getting done 🙏🙂👏🌳#southdevon #plasticpollution #volunteer 🐳 by @tillcoastclear
