What a whirlwind of Google I/0 this week!

1. Sat down with the phenomenal John Hennessy (Chairman of Alphabet) for the first episode of our series recorded at Google #CreatorStudio! We heard on Monday that John was free for 30 minutes on Tuesday.

Lakpathy (our amazing producer) made a 5 am journey from LA + Akshika from across the pond and had the most incredible 40 minutes picking the brains of one of the architects of Silicon Valley as we know it. Meredith - thank you for making this possible.

2. Met old friends from Google for Startups and made everyone vent about hiring and sales pains.

3. Thank you Iran Karimian for all the cute shots and being the bestest host

What a beautiful 2 days celebrating 25 years of the Learning Sciences and Technology (LSTD) program at @stanfordeducation

77 PhDs. 2% acceptance rate (what !?!) The first of its kind led by the legend himself - Roy Pea.

I remember when I first got accepted into Stanford, I was still at Google and truly conflicted about whether I belonged here in academia and if it made financial sense to take an almost 60% pay cut. Roy sat me down in the old CERAS lobby and talked about his own beginnings - how he ultimately reshaped spaces he wasn't "supposed" to be in. Without Roy's magical thinking around topics like distributed intelligences we probably wouldn't have a field called Learning Sciences, in the way we do today.

It truly felt like Christmas and all the kids had come home - to see all these giants on whose shoulders we stand. The faces behind the citations. I know we all talk so often about 'building community' especially in academia and it's tough. I haven't felt this way in a long time - a genuine sense of curiosity about why we learn, a commitment to make learning better and a reverence to rigorous, honest science that centers children, teachers and families.

My icing on the cake was getting to demo @tilliforkids to mentors who had seen Tilli as a PDF prototype.

And of course, getting to go back to my very first job! Emceeing with the phenomenal Tam. ❤️

This week we take @tilliforkids to over 8000+ curious, creative kids from 20+ schools serving Palestinian children across Jordan.

From a PDF that was my LDT project at Stanford to getting Tilli into the hands of first graders, their teachers and counselling teams to help them better understand the complex world of emotions, to find the right strategies to manage those big feelings and to build healthier relationships.

Self-awareness is the first step in Social & Emotional Learning - understanding our emotions, thoughts, and strengths, and how they shape our behavior. 🌱

Last week’s lesson with our youngest kids started with a story about a little girl. Together, the counselor and the kids paused to name the feelings in the story - sadness, anger, joy, excitement (using @tilliforkids).

Then they explored:
👀 Where do we feel those emotions in our bodies?
💛 What happens to us when we feel them?
🎨 What color would this feeling be?

This simple, playful process helps children connect stories to their own experiences and selves, making emotions easier to recognize and talk about. It also gives them the language and tools they’ll need later to manage those feelings in healthy ways.

These small moments of learning build the foundation for better focus, stronger relationships, and the confidence to express themselves. 💛✨

The idea of the 'growth mindset' took the education world by storm! But the data is telling us a different story.

A result of decades of research by Stanford professor Carol Dweck, it's the simple idea that we can grow our brain's capacity to learn and solve problems.

However, a review published in May this year raised a very important question: Do growth mindset-focused interventions work?

Alongside a diverse group of CSOs, CBOs, and government partners we📍established a Community of Practice on Child, Adolescent, and Youth (CAY) Participation and Campaigns.

Together, we focused on:
✅ Developing a shared plan to ensure children and young people are meaningfully heard
✅ Exploring how we can drive lasting impact through a collective platform
✅ Reviewing our CAY-friendly Participation and Campaigns Toolkit, shaped by insights from children, young people, and key players.

🪅This was a key step toward building a stronger, more connected network of child rights and child participation practitioners - aligning our goals and committing to sustained collaboration across both civil society and the government.
