We recently attended the Assemble with @materialmatters.design conference in London.

Covering sectors such as architecture and housing, automotive and fashion, we heard first-hand from material professionals about the ideas, technologies and tensions shaping the design world and material culture today.

Across talks, panels and live demonstrations, urgent questions about the role of material intelligence in a rapidly changing world were asked frankly in reference to sustainability, wellbeing, and education.

Kicking off with keynote speaker, Caroline Till, Co-founder, @franklintill in reference to sustainability - maintaining the material status quo is no longer enough - she said. We need regenerative solutions that pave the way towards a resilient and equitable material future.

The Hair Cycle project by @studiosannevisser is regenerative in the truest sense, providing benefits socially and environmentally across London by building bio-based and circular models for human hair waste across interiors, fashion, product and building materials.

Critically, the need for honesty and morality around materials is paramount, cited Peter Apps Contributing Editor, @insidehousingmagazine as he recalled the materials specified in the construction of the tragedy that was Grenfell Tower. We all have an obligation to collectively do better.

From forging new connections between farming, food and material culture @british.pasture.leather , to improving university syllabus and overall education on materials across design @groupwork_arch , it was resoundingly clear that material storytelling is key.

Congrats and thankyou to Material Matters’ @material.matters_grant.gibson
and William Knight for organising the event.

One of the most powerful messages we heard at last week’s Inspire Circular event was that of stubborn optimism.

In spite of economic uncertainty, geopolitical turmoil, and a backlash against sustainability, we heard how global businesses, creative agencies and material innovators alike are pushing the circularity agenda with dogged determination.

And it’s working.

Progress is happening; strides are being made. Now it’s time to accelerate the transition towards a circular future.

Will you be part of it?

Stay tuned for the Inspire Circular newsletter for updates, insights and news of future events.
