Do you ever wonder if there is still hope in humanity?

Well, Dr. @timreadgreens MP was a living example of that hope.

Tim was the very ideal of what I believe an elected representative should be — someone who genuinely cared for people, stood firmly by what he valued, and remained persistent in his vision for a better future for our planet.

He was a changemaker. A driving force for positive leadership. And someone whose life reminded me that we can still choose integrity, courage and kindness in a world that can sometimes seem to have forgotten their core values.

It is people like Tim who inspire me to keep going, to do better, and to believe in what humanity is capable of.

Nature has given us such a powerful gift — intelligence. Yet somehow, we often forget that we are the gardeners of this beautiful home we call Earth, not its owners, and certainly not its abusers.

Tim lived his life as a peace warrior. He was one of those rare people who chose non-violence, compassion and integrity as key pillars of life.

To me, Tim was a genuine sage in a suit — his suit almost like modern robes. He spoke with wisdom, kindness and conviction. At the same time, he was a wonderful role model as a father, full of humour, jokes and warmth — caring not only for his family, but for his team, his community and the planet he belonged to.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have met and worked alongside people like Tim. People who remind us that leadership is not simply about a position or a title, but about how we choose to live and serve.

If we can take a page from Dr Read’s book, perhaps it is this:

Live your Dharma — with joy, courage and commitment.

Thank you, Tim, for the example you gave us, for the kindness you shared, and for the hope you embodied.

You will live in our hearts forever.

I don’t often post on socials these days, but the sad passing of @timreadgreens made me remember the day he came to support the @amysfoundationau and bike safety in Melbourne’s inner north, and jumped in to rescue Alby when he fell off the stage. I was pretty heavily pregnant with Wolfgang and as I was talking with @mwkeenan, the small but active Alby had refused to stay on my lap. Tim was a genuinely good human and made a huge contribution to his community throughout his career. I’ll never forget his kindness and the way he showed up for the causes he believed in. Vale Dr Tim.

This is a still from a video I filmed on a Critical Mass on Johnston St almost exactly this time last year.

I’m filming everyone cycling, and as I turn the camera to Tim, he goes “Is this a selfie or an other-ie?”

I laugh as I reply “I’m doing an other-ie!” and almost drop the camera.

It’s been playing on a loop in my head the last two days.

Other memories looping in: sitting in Tim’s office as he said he thought I was on to a good story when I explained my concerns about road condition reporting (we are cool I swear); dreaming up skits with Tim, Ebony and Ed; looping arms and skipping in a circle when we got the speed limit on Lygon St dropped; standing on a balcony and swapping media slots to talk about truckzillas; sitting with Tim and family when it looked like the cancer was going away, talking potential retirement plans.

I’m finding it hard to process that this man, who was so full of life, and joy, and fight for a better world, is gone.

To process that Ange and their kids and Tim’s family have lost him, as well as his staff, mates and the rest of us who knew and loved him.

But the top feeling is just that: love.

I am so grateful for the time I got with Tim, and to Tim for spending so much of his far too brief time on earth using his big brain, humour, patience and perseverance to make life better for others. I know that so many others are feeling the same way.

A truly good man, a great colleague, a friend, a champion for me and for others, a kindred spirit.

Thank you for everything, Tim.

Tim Read was exactly the sort of Tim I’d like to be — principled, genuine, humble, funny, and kind.

We are saddened to hear of the loss of Dr Tim Read @timreadgreens a staunch supporter of human rights who served as the MLA for Brunswick. Tim was a rare figure in our politics, absolutely committed to his electorate, for whom he worked with a deep understanding of the implications of international affairs for people everywhere.

Teachers and School Staff for Palestine Victoria are deeply grateful for his unstinting support and friendship in the struggle for a free Palestine. This included practical help which has allowed us to deliver material to teachers across Victoria and Australia.

We especially thank him for his voice at rallies and protest actions at a time when others in power shrank from speaking out against genocide.

Our condolences to his family and comrades.

I’ve known @timreadgreens for probably seven or eight years. I met him at my favourite coffee ☕️ shop called Small Block, on Lygon street in East Brunswick. It unfortunately closed down because of COVID. I used to hate politicians, because I didn’t think they listened to expert advice and only cared about themselves. Tim was very different to most politicians. He restored my faith in democracy. He didn’t use megaphone diplomacy, to make his point. He didn’t throw mud. He had many other methods. I wish we could have 100 more just like Tim. Tim would often turn up at the same events and protests as me. He cared about the same issues as me. He helped out all the time for causes that needed help. He was really good friend, and I will miss him heaps.

I just wish he had more time. So unfair. 😭

I’ll never forget the day I walked into Tim Read’s office, not really knowing where else to turn.

I explained my situation to the staff and asked if there was anything they could do to help me and my business. Tim walked out from behind the counter, listened to me, and simply said, “Leave it with me.”

And he did.

There’s a very real chance that New Age Coffee is still here today because of what Tim did for me that day. He helped me at a time when I genuinely needed someone in my corner, and I’ll never forget it.

What meant even more was that it didn’t end there. Afterwards, Tim would come into the shop for a coffee and continue to support the business he’d helped me keep alive. I don’t think he ever truly knew just how much that meant to me.

So incredibly sad to hear of his passing after his battle with cancer.

Some people probably never realise just how much of an impact one act of kindness can have on someone’s life. Tim’s had a huge impact on mine, and on New Age Coffee.

I’ll always be grateful for what he did for me.

Vale, Tim Read, who served as the Victorian MP for the seat of Brunswick up until this year with the Greens, and who passed away today after a battle with metastatic cancer.

Here’s a few photos I’ve taken of Tim at various rallies and protest actions over the years. He was someone who from my experience was always proactive in using his platform as an MP to support various social justice movements; and I’ve always considered him to be an all round top bloke who I’m sure will be missed by a lot of people in the activist community.

Devastated.

Tim was a friend to all, truly. No matter someone’s political stance, whenever Tim came up in conversation, they would always say how impressed they were by his debating skills and composure.
It takes a rare kind of person to cut through politics and reach the soul of everyone they speak to. That is a changemaker.
