"I love writing programme notes, but most of all I love writing programme notes for Riot. For a decade now, I’ve been asked by the group to introduce our audiences to the vast range of new and recent music that we play; and for all of that time, I’ve also had permission to be playful in what I do."

Having writer Tim Rutherford-Johnson on our Artistic Board doesn’t only add an interesting perspective and artistic voice to the ensemble, but it also means we have direct access to some of the most thoughtful and beautiful programme notes for our concerts. Now we’ve made a space on our website to highlight a few 🔆

Take a peek inside the programme 🔎🎼

Part of the Kings Place concert series honouring the uncompromising British composer Steve Martland, the internationally renowned Riot Ensemble and mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean performed a transformational programme last week, bringing pieces by Frederic Rzewski and Lisa Streich to meet Martland’s ‘Dance Works’.

Rzewski’s Coming Together at @kingsplacelondon tonight 8pm!

📣📣📣📣📣📣

Five years ago, we created a very different version of Rzewski’s masterpiece, CassetteBoy style, using the speeches and press conferences of Boris Johnson in relation to Brexit and the Covid pandemic. […] The video caused a bit of a stir at the time, although we had Rzewski’s approval to do it this way. Looking back on it now, it’s a time capsule, an attempt to make sense of a very weird time.

I spoke with Tim Rutherford-Johnson for Purposeful Listening about my @ivorsacademy nominated piece Undone, the santoor, diasporic identity, embodiment, illness, improvisation, and the strange process of learning to let go.

It’s rare to have a conversation that gives space to the messy, difficult and unresolved parts of making work. Especially at a time where the future for Iran feels so uncertain, and my practice therefore takes on a new and heavier weight. I’m really grateful for the care Tim brought to this interview.

Lauri Supponen @svppis traces vast ideas back to the smallest of turning points—where a tree falls, a line is crossed, a direction quietly shifts.

His music, including ‘Ave Maris Stella’, ‘Picea’, and the new work ‘east’ (all at hcmf// 2026), unfolds from overlooked histories and fragile geographies. From Alpine spruce forests to Renaissance echoes, from NASA’s hidden figures to imagined sonic ecosystems, Supponen finds connection in unlikely places—where past and present, science and myth, all begin to blur.

An oboist, double bassist, and composer, his work moves between the tactile and the conceptual: garden-hose instruments meet Gabrieli chorales; violin histories grow from trees; directions fold in on themselves until east becomes west.

Supponen’s music reminds us that the smallest shifts—a detail, a decision, a moment—can carry consequences far beyond themselves.

‘The further east you go, the more west there is.’

"The record Chadburn has been working towards for years, gloriously realised..."

Thanks to writer Tim Rutherford-Johnson for putting my 2025 album, Sleep in the Shadow of the Alternator, in his top 10 releases of the year. Take a look at his other (impeccable) choices too, on his Substack (link in bio).

If you’d like to buy any of my physical or download releases on Bandcamp, I’m having a modest January sale. Use the discount code newyear2026 (valid till 31st January) to get 25% off anything of mine, including my previous three 2020s albums and also the Simon Bookish trilogy of albums (although physical copies of most of those are long since sold out).

And THANKS, once more, to everyone who has supported, listened and spread the word about my album this year. It’s been so brilliant to know the music has reached you.

Wishing you all a splendid and joyful New Year. X x x
