Artist Profile: Michael Finnissy ‘All Finnissy’s music is in a sense autobiographical.’ As Michael Finnissy celebrates his 80th birthday, Tim Rutherford-Johnson explores the life, work and Political Agendas of one of Britain’s most distinctive composers. From his first compositions at the age of four to his Ninth and Tenth Political Agendas, Finnissy’s music brings together the personal and political, drawing on folk traditions, musical history, identity, place and the world around him. Read the full artist profile to discover more about Michael Finnissy, his remarkable body of work and the ideas behind his music. 🎟️ See Rob Hao @robhao perform 3 works by Finnissy at hcmf// 2026 — tickets via the link in our bio. I spoke with Tim Rutherford-Johnson for Purposeful Listening about my @ivorsacademy nominated piece Undone, the santoor, diasporic identity, embodiment, illness, improvisation, and the strange process of learning to let go. It’s rare to have a conversation that gives space to the messy, difficult and unresolved parts of making work. Especially at a time where the future for Iran feels so uncertain, and my practice therefore takes on a new and heavier weight. I’m really grateful for the care Tim brought to this interview. You can read it via the link in my bio. Pic by @2kaew by @timrj2025
