POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This weekend, Afro Kreyasyon collaborated with @miwamovie to bring our Experiential Learning: Plants Workshop to @phillydesigncollective

I absolutely treasure these opportunities to share the beauty, culture, and biodiversity of Haiti 🇭🇹 with children through books, hands-on learning, and planting activities. ❤️ There’s nothing more rewarding than helping young minds discover the world around them, one seed and one story at a time!

A heartfelt thank you to @tinabelike, for the invitation and for creating space for these meaningful learning experiences. 💚

9/12 September marked the end of Summer and the transition into Autumn, a descent in temperature, movement, light, and even (especially for my fellow SAD babes) mood.

I have so much grace, gratitude, patience, and love for myself in all my seasons.

YASP had its first staff beach day in 2 years, and I almost didn't get to go. An unexpected run-in with an ex, a detoured trolley, and a cancelled Uber later, I barely made it onto the train to Atlantic City with mere minutes to spare.

On our journey, we encountered a magician who graced us with his tricks and inspiring anecdotes. Once we arrived, the water was cold, but the sky was sunny and clear. I djed on my bluetooth speaker and read a little. A group of us walked a few blocks away from the boardwalk to buy fresh seafood platters to go with our per diems before catching the train back to Philly. It was my sole beach trip this entire summer.

Labor Day cookout in North Philly surrounded by beautiful people!

The final Watermelon Glow party of the season was Caribbean themed so I had to represent 🇯🇲

Sun Ra Arkestra honored John Coltrane on what would've been his 100th birthday on 9/23. Coltrane and Sun Ra respected and were inspired by each other, but they never made a record together. Marshall Allen, the oldest living SRA band member at 102 though he did perform with the band this particular night, also overlapped with Coltrane while he lived in Philadelphia. It's always a pleasure to witness these elders play and continue to embody the whimsical spirit of Sun Ra.

The 50th anniversary of the release of "Songs in the Key of Life," one of the best and most influential albums of all time, was on 9/28.

Part of my lore is a 20-year grudge I held because my father took Qrescent, but not also me, to see Stevie Wonder in Detroit when we were kids. Mind you, I was only like 5, but I never forgot (or forgave frfr) him (and lowkey her though she was innocent.)

Fast forward to 2014, Stevie launched a "SitKoL" tour and there was a Philly stop at the Wells Fargo Center. Q surprised me with tickets for my 26th birthday, all was forgiven, and a 20+ year weight was lifted! He sounded and played exactly like the records,

Leeway Foundation is proud to announce the 2026 recipients of the Media Artist + Activist Residency (MAR), awarding $125,000 in funding to five collaborations between women, trans*, and gender nonconforming media artists and social justice organizations across the Greater Philadelphia region.

Now in its sixth year, MAR supports community-rooted residencies that harness the power of media and storytelling to document, reframe, and amplify movements for social change. This year’s cohort demonstrates how artists and community organizations can use creative practice to preserve stories and histories—and utilize them for building political education, strengthening collective memory, reclaiming public space, and creating new pathways for people to participate in movements for justice.

The 2026 projects engage urgent questions of who gets to shape Philadelphia’s future and whose stories are remembered, heard, and valued. From the impending closure of a historic public school and the experiences of immigrant domestic workers to the lives of incarcerated women and the struggles for housing and economic security among Black trans Philadelphians, these projects center communities building power in the face of systemic inequity. Across documentary film, public art, photography, digital media, and participatory storytelling, this year’s artists and organizations are creating work that invites audiences to witness, learn, connect, and take action.

The Media Artist + Activist Residency was made possible by generous support from our funding partner, the People’s Media Fund.

Plum & Pear Glazed Pork Belly 😍

The fourth jam in the @bonnemaman_us calendar was Plum, Pear, Star Anise.

Once I tasted it I knew it was destined to grace a succulent bite of pork belly and when I’m right, I’m right y’all. Sweet, savory, tangy. This was so good we had a little tussle over me eating the last pieces. 😂

Run to H Mart and get you some pork belly right now.

Of course if you don’t have this exact jam you can sub what you DO have, and that goes for all these recipes. Get creative and delicious with me!

*PS: clearly I eyeballed the seasonings here so these are approximate. Just sprinkle till your ancestors stay stop.

RECIPE:
12oz pork belly strip, thick cut
1/2 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 tablespoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 tablespoon (.5oz) rice vinegar
1 tablespoon (.5oz) dry sherry
2 tablespoon (1oz) plum jam
Garnish: roasted sesame seeds, green onion

INSTRUCTIONS:
-Preheat oven to 400°F
-Season pork belly with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Thoroughly rub seasonings into the meat.
-Place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and roast for 45-50 minutes
-In a large bowl, whisk together plum jam, rice vinegar, and dry sherry
-When fully cooked, remove pork belly from oven, place it on a cutting board, and discard used parchment paper
-Set oven to broil
-Line sheet pan with a fresh piece of parchment paper and set aside
-Slice pork belly into cubes then add them to your bowl and toss in jam glaze until coated
-Spread onto prepared sheet pan and broil 1-2 minutes
-Garnish with sesame seeds and green onion

How Do You Enjoy the Beautiful Game When You Can’t Have Nice Things? by Ian Rolf for Woymagazine.com

“This World Cup and Haiti’s qualification to it have been a study on the idea that “we can’t have nice things.

Beyond the situation at home, the broader geopolitical context in which this World Cup is taking place leaves us with much to consider.

Although the tournament is officially co-hosted by three nations, the bulk of the games are taking place in the US, where the government has been the most bellicose, anti-Haitian, anti-foreigner, and generally opposed to the spirit of the game we’ve ever seen.”
