First time rigs meet for @tinbox1380 in his beauty of a mk1 mini, he’s had this thing for 35 years ! This mk1 (1959-1967) is rocking a 1275cc a-series engine , been converted to disc brakes , handling mods including KAD sway bars, a bunch of bright work and the list goes on

It’s funny to think there’s 40 years difference in age between this and my own one! Love it

A smile of satisfaction from ear to ear on @davehord ‘s face as he backed his newly acquired 98 year old Ford out of the garage. So genuine, and so much enthusiasm for this most exciting moment as a piece of history rumbles to life and moves under its own power. It was a great start, but soon after, the hiccups came, and I mean that quite literally.

Pop, pop….pop, pop, pop after a few miles down the road. It was a day of trial and error replacing part after part in the ignition and fuel system and checking over everything else on the car for its trip ahead to Vancouver Island from the little airport we were stationed at in Calgary. The car would get a few miles from the airport, and then it was backfire after backfire and enough bucking to compete in the Calgary Stampede.

Calls and meetups with friends, and with helpful new acquaintances from the Stampede City Model A Ford Club helped lead us to figuring out that after sitting some of its life on a farm, much of that farm ended up in the gas tank. Wheat, seeds and who knows what else happened to be sitting in the gas tank and squeezing its way through the fuel lines resulting of course in blockages of fuel and, bucking and popping! Not an ideal state for the long, mountainous journey ahead.

On one of the drives, the oil /breather cap popped off and we were unable to find it. On the next test drive, with a mechanics rag stuffed into the filler tube, Dave took off down the road leaving a slick of oil behind him. Of course it was this moment his phone wasn’t on him and we couldn’t alert him to the alarming rate at which oil was pouring out. He arrived back maybe just in time to discover that almost all 5 litres was gone. This, due to an engine with a lot of blow by, no rear main seal(uses an oil slinger instead), and the aforementioned stuffed rag “filler cap” literally pressured all the oil to leave the engine out the slinger.

Our exit from Alberta was delayed, but at least as the photographer all these mechanical shenanigans created time for many photo opportunities, like pairing up the Model A with a Ford GT40 the happened to be around that day!

One of the many overlooked and forgotten automobile manufacturers from the early days of the automotive era is Welch. With a background in bicycle manufacturing, like many other early auto manufacturers, and experimentation with engines dating back to 1898, brothers Allie Ray and Fred Welch founded the Chelsea Manufacturing Company in 1901 in Chelsea, MI. A few years later, in early 1904, they relocated to Pontiac, MI and renamed the company The Welch Motor Car Company. Their early cars were small two-cylinder models, and it was not until 1905 that they developed and patented an overhead camshaft hemispherical combustion chamber engine and implemented it into production. This innovation was significant, as the hemi design allows for a faster and more complete burn of the air-fuel mixture, meaning more of the fuel’s energy is
converted into useful power at the crankshaft. It is also considered to be an inspiration for the famous Chrysler Hemi engine.

At this time, Welch also transitioned to four-cylinder models, initially producing 36 H.P., with further development pushing output to an impressive 50 H.P. by 1906, making them premier automobiles for the period. A variety of body styles were offered, ranging from two seater speedsters to limousines. Welch also entered the competitive arena participating in the 1907 Glidden Tour from Cleveland to New York and earning a perfect score, which helped bring publicity to the marque. In 1910, Welch was acquired by General Motors and subsequently
dissolved. Today, only four surviving examples are known to exist, making them highly sought after. Notable owners have included Bill Harrah and the Henry Ford Museum.

This 1908 Welch is one of the four survivors and is fitted with the aforementioned 50 H.P. four cylinder 336ci engine and paired with a seven passenger touring body. Its first owner was Louis Henry Perlman of New York. In 1906, Perlman filed a patent for a “demountable rim for motor car tires” or in layman’s terms, the spare wheel. His company, the Perlman Rim Corporation, produced 5,000 sets of this demountable rim every day, and he was paid $3M by General Motors every year for his work.

@lasvegasconcours 🖤

I’m endlessly grateful to be recognized among cars I’ve admired my whole life. Thank you to my parents for raising a car girl one who fell in love with oil, patina, and process more than polish.

This 911 has been my collaborator for fourteen years it carries my art, my stories, and my heart.

Here’s to more women restoring, creating, and driving their own stories.
