The Patrón Tequila Express. Words are insufficient to describe the experience of stepping onto this majestic 1927 rail car, much less traveling across the country aboard it. Built for the private travel of railroad executives, it was remodeled in glorious splendor by hospitality visionary Isaac Tigrett (Hard Rock Cafe, House of Blues), who later sold it to Patrón founder John Paul DeJoria who christened it the “Tequila Express.”

One of the greatest privileges of my time at Patrón was having access to this remarkable piece of history.

Rails to Tales was our annual program from 2016-2019, where we took the train from its home station in LA to New Orleans, hosting popups and dinners at station stops and picking up bartenders, journalists and fans along the way. Once in Nola, the train car became the focal point of our Tales of the Cocktail footprint.

Some stops like Denver and El Paso were quick, and we would have about 20 minutes for guests to hop on, have a drink and snack, take pictures, etc. and when the whistle blew, everyone had to hop off. Some stops like Chicago were overnight, so we could host guests for a full dinner.

In 2019 the Texas Eagle route took us through Dallas, Ft Worth, Austin, New Braunfels, and San Antonio—we picked up guests in one city and had a Sprinter van waiting at the next station, to take them back to their car an hour or two later.

From San Antonio, we would pick up a full load of passengers who joined us for the long and sometimes raucous all-day journey to New Orleans. One rule was enforced: you had to dress up for dinner.

While riding the “Patrain” was the ultimate experience, most folks enjoyed it while it wasn’t moving, as the car anchored our Tales activations. We would host a party on the adjacent platform, while people took turns touring the car. When not hosting the big event, we used the incomparable space to shoot video, record interviews, host private tastings, chef dinners etc. At the end of the week, we headed back to LA and took along as many lucky passengers as we could accommodate.

Cheers to the Tequila Express! I am forever grateful to have gotten to share it with the community. 🥰🚂

When I took this picture it was just a peace sign. Today it takes on a different meaning.

I learned yesterday that for reasons beyond my control (a restructuring exercise and a new VP at Patrón), yesterday would be my last day at Bacardi. I want to take a moment to reflect and celebrate some of the amazing people I have gotten to work with over the last decade, with my most heartfelt apologies for those I will remember as soon as I hit “post.”

Thanks to the original dream team Stephen, Steph, and Egor. We built an incredible community of friends around us.

Egor Polonskiy—eight years on you are still the funniest, smartest, hardest working person I have ever known. I will always treasure our partnership.

Thank you Lee Applbaum and Greg Cohen for taking a chance on me back in 2015, and for giving me the opportunity that changed my life forever. The old PSC team is the stuff of legend.

I will always be proud of what we’ve accomplished together. I didn’t know we would run out of time so soon, but I also know we didn’t waste a minute of it .

Salud!
