What happens when individual conscience, personal accountability, and a community’s moral expectations come into conflict?

On September 11, 2026, CEVIHE’s first-year undergraduate Edge Fellows gathered for a lunch discussion of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850), their shared summer reading. Set in seventeenth-century Puritan Massachusetts, the novel follows Hester Prynne, who must wear a scarlet “A” as punishment for adultery. Her public disgrace raises difficult questions about the relationship between individual freedom and collective morality, the consequences of social exclusion, and the tension between judgment and forgiveness.

Considered a classic of American literature, The Scarlet Letter explores enduring questions about religion, gender, authority, and social conformity. Hawthorne invites readers to examine how communities establish and enforce moral standards, how public reputation shapes individual identity, and whether compassion and independent judgment can coexist with deeply held convictions.

CEVIHE student worker Catie Samaan, who helped select the novel, explains: “We wanted to choose a book that would give students something substantive to wrestle with while still feeling connected to their own experience. The Scarlet Letter stood out because its themes of judgment, conformity, gender, shame, and individual identity are still incredibly relevant, and its New England setting makes it feel especially engaging for Tufts students!”

For students beginning college, these questions bear on the communities they will help build. How can shared standards coexist with independent judgment? Can accountability leave room for compassion and growth? The book offered a starting point for their exploration of civic virtues, open inquiry, and engagement across differences. #tufts #cevihe #highered #civicengagement #books

Join us as we kick off the start of LGBTQ+ History Month with zine-making and oral history interviews led by librarians Gabby Womack and Joanna Gray. As queer history faces near-constant erasure, it is important to preserve our collective memories and experiences. These types of storytelling are liberating practices that remind us that we all matter and are worth remembering.

Who shapes U.S. foreign policy in practice? How should power over war, peace, and America’s role in the world be divided among Congress, the president, the courts, and the national security state?

Explore these questions at our conference book display at @tischlibrary, located in the hallway toward the Tower Café. Organized in collaboration with @ginnlibrary, the display brings together books by @tuftsuniversity faculty and conference speakers, offering a wide range of perspectives on presidential authority, congressional oversight, war powers, and America’s role in the world.

Stop by to browse the books and explore our conference reading list, which includes articles, legal materials, and an extended bibliography for anyone interested in digging deeper.

Then join us on campus on September 24–25, 2026, for the U.S. Foreign Policy and the Separation of Powers conference. Scholars, practitioners, and public commentators will examine the balance of authority among Congress, the presidency, the courts, and the national security apparatus, considering how foreign policy decisions intersect with constitutional principles and democratic accountability.

Many thanks to Ellen McDonald, Martha Kelehan, and the Ginn Library and Tisch Library teams for making this pop-up library possible! Visit the conference website linked in the bio for the agenda, speaker lineup, and registration, and bring your questions to the conversation. #tufts #cevihe #foreignpolicy #books #library

Very special to hear of this book-sighting from dear @boaniva. (And pretty sure it's swooning beside @jzsalvipoet's Solito!) @tischlibrary (in its former life as Wessell) gave me my first job when I arrived fresh off the plane from Karachi in 1988. I shelved books, then worked the reference desk, and loved it because our supervisor, an otherwise unpredictable desi woman, wore billowing saris even in the biting winter, and this warmed my homesick heart. Tufts library was also the site of many an elated/anguished hour spent researching and writing my dissertation. So yeah, sing me a circle from that shelf.
