Opening today: Tish Murtha & Kuba Ryniewicz “Close to Home” exhibition at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art

Driven by a commitment to document the impact of deindustrialisation on working class communities in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to expose societal inequality. As seen in the Modern Films documentary TISH, the photographer was committed to representation, equality and real life impact.

Today would have been Tish Murtha’s 70th birthday. And while it’s a tragedy that she isn’t here to mark the occasion, we can still celebrate her work and the remarkable endeavours of her daughter, Ella, to establish Tish as one of the finest documentary photographers to create images of and with working class people. I’ve just pre-ordered a copy of Vandalism on a Grand Scale, a new book collecting Tish’s work published by @britishculturearchive and featuring words by Ella Murtha and Jen Corcoran @ohnococo_ (who produced @tishmurthafilm). The first 1000 copies will come with an exclusive fine art card featuring the cover, so order one while you can.

Join us TOMORROW for a screening of Tish @tishmurthafilm

Film starts at 19.30. Free admission. Dm to instagram or mail info@oblong.dk to reserve a seat.

Directed by Paul Sng
Duration: 90min
Year: 2023

Screening programme is supported by Politiken Fonden #politikenfonden

A working-class photographer captures the impact of Thatcherism on the north of England but is unable to escape the poverty and inequality she exposed.

Driven by a commitment to document the impact of deindustrialisation on working class communities in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to expose societal inequality. She felt she had an obligation to the people and problems within her local environment, and that documentary photography could highlight and challenge the social disadvantages that she herself had suffered. However, despite early acclaim for her work, she was unable to make a living from photography and died in poverty.

The film is a journey of exploration for Ella Murtha as both daughter and custodian of the Tish Murtha archive, a chance to elevate and preserve a legacy that has been lost and to tell the story of an artist and woman outside of the ‘mother’ that existed for her – or the version of Tish claimed within dominant narratives of the 70s and 80s photography – from the people who knew Tish and the images she left behind.

TISH (@tishmurthafilm) was a really special film to show for our screening last night, the day after mother's day. Ella Murtha (Tish's daughter) was an executive producer on the film and you journey with her to explore her mother's life and body of vital documentary photography.

Not only was Tish an extraordinary talent but also truly dedicated to exposing the truth of working class life in Newcastle during Thatcher time. It is shocking, enlightung, tough but inspirational to watch and learn about. It is a really important documentary to watch - thanks to all who made it to the screening.

You can check out TISH on all the major streaming platforms from April 5th. Plus listen to the original score on Spotify.

The biggest thanks to @filmhubscotland for funding us so we can show films like this to our community. And a HUGE thanks to @lindsaywatsonstudio for being out guest as one of the editors of TISH (alongside Angela Slavin), she was able to give us incredible insight into the process of telling Tish's story and doing her justice.

24 portraits - Day 18

I’m sharing photographic portraits I’ve made every day this advent.

The wonderful EllaMurtha, daughter of renowned photographer tishmurtha commissioned me to make her portraits in summer 2020. She was visiting Portobello to discuss a documentary about her Mam’s life with filmmaker Paul Sng. I highly recommend you watch Tish on BBC iPlayer. She was a remarkable talent, a tenacious photographer, an amazing Mam and did not receive the recognition or support she needed from the photoworld in her lifetime. This is often the case for working class female artists. I’m speaking here are someone who has experienced direct and indirect class shaming in the arts and feel a real solidarity with Tish.
Her voiceover is by @betteblavatsky

Check out tishmurtha Archive if you don’t know it and buy books of her work via @bluecoatpress as well as currently hanging in the Tate. Ella works tirelessly to ensure Tish is rightly celebrated. I’m proud to call Ella and Tish’s sister Eileen @browneileenmurtha my friends. Big hearted, beautiful souls.

Sharing today as it’s exactly a year since I saw the film screening at Craigmiller Arts, Edinburgh. I missed the premiere a few weeks before because I was teaching an evening class.

If you’d like to learn more about portraiture sign up for my @portyphoto workshop The Portrait.
If you’d like to commission me for an editorial or bespoke commission please get in touch. Availability is limited.

Tish Murtha was a phenomenal documentary photographer, overlooked in her lifetime, who dedicated herself to documenting her community in the natural light of their time from the 1970’s till her death in 2013. Tish revealed the humanity that is so often brutally marginalised by political and economic deprivation and her devotion to her work was uncompromsing.
Ella Murtha, Tish’s only child, works equally hard to keep Tish’s portfolio of work present for us all to learn from and together with film makers Paul Sng, Jennifer Corcoran and Holly Galloway, Ella has created a very moving portrait of Tish Murtha’s life and works. I feel so lucky to have been involved in helping Ella tell that story.
The film is available to watch online in the UK and Ireland via Curzon Home Cinema, BFI Player, Sky Store and BBC iPlayer. Don’t miss out on seeing this touching film.
You can also find out more about Tish Murtha and her work at www.tishmurtha.co.uk
If you’re in London, her works are now part of the permanent collections of Tate Britain, the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of London.
