Issued in 1937 by the D.L. Clark Candy Company of Pittsburgh, PA, the Clark Bar Josh Gibson is one of the rarest and most mysterious regional issues of the late 1930’s. Cards from the premium set were issued in boxes of Clark Bars and a full set of 32 could then be redeemed for a fielders glove. But the D.L. Clark Co. never printed the Gibson making it impossible for anyone to complete the set and therefore no gloves were redeemed.
A few intrepid kids caught on and wrote letters of complaint, but instead of printing the Gibson card the candy bar execs simply mailed the kids cheap gloves and discontinued the idea of ever producing baseball cards again. Long believed a unicorn of a card, I was lucky enough to see one example, a test copy proof, NFS, on an eccentric dealers table at a card show in Philadelphia in 1997, but sadly I did not take any pictures. Painted from memory with acrylic paint on clayboard, this is my tribute to that mythical card, one of the true rarities in the hobby and a tribute to one of the greatest baseball players of all time, Joshua Gibson. #joshgibson #homesteadgrays #pittsburgh #vintagebaseballcards #fictional
