Today was a pretty amazing day. ❤️

Wilay and I have been working our SOULS off for the past several years, doing what we love, without compromise, and being each other’s loudest cheerleader through all of it.

And today felt a little like harvest time. ✨

My book, *Disobedient Women*, is finally, officially out in the world. The book tour becomes richer and richer: now a local feminist LGBTQIA+ bookstore invited me to present it (which is what I wanted: bring Disobedient Women inside and outside of academia), and while walking by the university bookstore today, I suddenly saw my book sitting there on the shelf. 🥹 The posters are up for the book launch on October 29 at Spelman, and today’s production meeting made everything feel very, very real. We are ready.

Then, in the afternoon, I finally made it to the museum to see Wilay’s work now that the installation is complete. And I cried. I know every single one of those pieces. I have watched them come into being from day zero. I have seen the labor, the frustration, the experimentation, the welding, the thinking, the starting over. And still, seeing them together in that space hit me in a completely different way. This exhibition goes straight to the heart. ❤️ If you can, gift yourself the experience of seeing it.

And then… we had a private screening of a short documentary that two filmmakers made about Wilay’s work. (WHAT?! 🥹) Watching it felt both surreal and somehow exactly right—like something that needed to exist.

And, of course, I immediately thought about our children. One day they will have all of this: the books, the artworks, the exhibitions, the films, the photographs, the stories. An archive of their parents making things, believing in things, struggling for things, loving each other, and refusing to give up on the lives we wanted to build. That thought got me. 🥹

I’m not even going to try to find the right words for all the feelings tonight.

I’m grateful. I’m proud of us. And somehow, after today, I feel strong in a new way. ✨✨✨

Now, have you got your copy of *Desobedient Women* yet? 😎💥🔥

The audience became part of the research!!

At our Switch Code Imagineers Lab Open Rehearsal + Prototype Showing, we invited our audience to do more than witness our experiments. We asked them to turn to their neighbors, discuss what they had just experienced, and consider what they wanted to see us accept, reject, revise, or reimagine.

What did you witness? What surprised you? What deserves further investigation?

This is how we develop choreographic research at the intersection of Black embodied knowledge, emerging technology, and collective imagination.

The showing was not the conclusion. The conversation was part of the choreography.

And now, back to the lab!

Now the REAL work begins!

After Friday’s Switch Code Imagineers Lab Open Rehearsal + Prototype Showing, we have a wealth of delicious audience feedback to unpack, interrogate, and put into action.

What do we keep? What do we reject? What needs revision? And what new questions emerged from what we witnessed together?

One of the most unexpected gifts came from the high school seniors visiting Spelman College for our department’s Dance at Spelman Weekend, an opportunity for prospective Dance majors to experience our program. Their observations were thoughtful, perceptive, and surprisingly sophisticated. They challenged us to reconsider aspects of the work through fresh eyes!

What a reminder of the intellectual and creative contributions young artists bring into research spaces when we invite them to participate.

Now our Imagineers return to the lab to analyze, revise, experiment, and make some difficult artistic decisions.

The prototype was never the destination. The questions, discoveries, and revisions are where our research advances.

Back to work, Imagineers! We have some thinking AND moving to do.
