• Move through legacy: engage Marrakesh as a living archive of imagination, tracing artists like Josephine Baker who transformed foreign terrains into stages of belonging.

Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00PM - 2:15PM
1 Credit (also applies towards a wellness credit)

Learn to become a Speculative Futurist in this course.

You’ll be asked to imagine:
What does liberation feel like in motion?
What happens when Black bodies dream through code?

You’ll prototype futures that don’t yet exist, building performance works and immersive experiences that speculate on healing, justice, and possible worlds. Your work becomes a kind of cultural prophecy, not just art.

Register for this course, and you'll work with our SWITCH CODE BLACK IMAGINEERS FELLOWS this semester, also in collaboration with Emory University Music Department, Associate Professor Adam Mirza's Electronica Music course.

When I was about 10 or 11, God gave me a vision.

He showed me a time before I was formed. I remember sitting on His lap in a state of bliss I still cannot explain. He turned me into a Monarch butterfly and sent me down to see the Mother He had chosen for me.

I fluttered around Kosciusko until I found her.

My Mommy.

She was a little girl, about the same age I was when I received the vision. I landed on her nose, and she looked at me with those big eyes and that beautiful smile. She placed me on her finger, then her shoulder, and took me everywhere.

She played stickball and ran SO FAST with me holding on.

I remember the JOY. The giggles.

She was perfect.

Perfect for ME.

When I flew away to return to our Father, she jumped and sang a song to me.

After I was born, Mommy always said I stared at her like I already knew her. She said she felt like she had seen me before.

I was her Snookie.

Perhaps she named that little butterfly Snookie all those years before. IDK.

All I know is God showed me HER.

She was THE ONE.

My Mommy left this Earth one month after her 80th birthday and returned to our Father who first introduced us.

She was my BEST GIRL. My ace. My connection. My anchor. My comforter.

There are no words left unsaid between us. No love left ungiven. Nothing left undone.

So I have peace.

And I have immense sorrow.

I am not afraid to continue thriving without my Mom and Dad physically here. I am a FORCE, especially now that my Mother has joined my Dad and my Ancestors.

But right now, this realization that my Mommy is no longer physically here has me feeling overly dangerous.

So...leave me alone.

And those who love and truly care for me, please check on me. Keep me and my Sister in your prayers.

My Mommy has left the building.

And somewhere inside me, that little Monarch butterfly still remembers:

Some of the most important work in our study abroad program happened on the quiet days.

Each week, we intentionally paused. Hammams, massage, the pool, garden walks, the sauna, rest, and naps became part of the curriculum. Those restorative days helped our bodies recover, reset, and prepare for the intensity of the creative work ahead.

Watching our dance majors immerse themselves in the research and choreography for Thighs of Thunder: A Choreographic Archive of Contradiction reminded me why this structure mattered.

This excerpt was performed at the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech after weeks of studying, questioning, resting, and creating together.

The title still makes me smile!

A trusted member of my artistic council recently challenged me. They said the title, Thighs of Thunder was memorable, but perhaps too playful for the weight of the work.

They were right... This choreography has never been about humor. It is an ongoing study of contradiction, inspired by Thunder, Perfect Mind, an ancient text that refuses singular identity and instead asks us to acknowledge the truths we carry at once.

Each performance has become another chapter. Duke. Spelman. Morocco. Each new space reshapes the choreography, while the underlying code remains intact.

I keep returning to retrograde, coded gesture, repetition, and reconfiguration because they mirror the way memory works. We do not always move forward to understand ourselves. Sometimes we move backward. Sometimes we circle. Sometimes we speak in a language only certain bodies recognize.

The work continues to grow. Soon...Kebbi Williams' original score and performance with the dancers, biometric technologies with my imagineers collaborators, projection, and the cabaret influences that have long lived in my imagination still lie ahead.

Now, it has been a long time but...., we have a home where those ideas belong. Ursa Major from T. Lang Dance!!!

Perhaps the title was never asking to be changed.

Perhaps it was asking to be understood and patient.

When I was young, I learned dance.
I also spent years learning how to think like an artist.
Those are not the same thing.

Technique gives young people tools. Curiosity gives them a voice. Creation gives them confidence. Imagination gives them the courage to build something the world has never seen.

That is why I created Ursa Major.
We are building a movement school for young artists ages 13 to 18 who want more than classes. We are building a place where choreography, creativity, technology, history, and imagination belong in the same room.

NOT EVERY STUDENT IS MEANT FOR URSA MAJOR.

Ursa Major is for students ages 13-18 who stay after rehearsal because they have another idea.

Who ask why.

Who make dances in their bedrooms.

Who sketch choreography in notebooks.

Who love performing but also want to build.

Who see movement differently.

ANNOUNCEMENT//

I am opening the doors to the inaugural T. Lang Dance Artistic Leadership Fellowship // a two-year residency built for choreographers who are ready to lead more than their own work.

Most fellowships end at the studio door. This one walks Fellows through every room of the house: individual mentorship with me, paid teaching inside Ursa Major Academy, producing stipends for our Winter and Summer Intensives, grant writing mentorship, fiscal sponsorship, institutional leadership.

Two artists will be named to this founding cohort, and each will leave holding the full architecture required to build something of their own.

This residency is built for artists standing at a particular threshold // choreographing consistently, living in or ready to relocate to Atlanta, already dreaming of the company, the school, or the festival that will hold their work for decades to come.
