✍🏾🔮Horror Genres I Want to Write✍🏾🔮 Part Two! What IS botanical horror anyway?? I loved The Secret Garden as a kid but also think it's a good lens to look at the climate emergency through. Because isn't there something horrific about ecosystems being forced to change because of human negligence? I'm admittedly not the most versed in this genre because I wasn't seeing as many BIPOC writers in it in the past. Books I've enjoyed: 📚When We Were Birds (you don't say?!) 📚Happy Friend Day 📚Mexican Gothic 📚I'm still in the middle of Humboldt Cut 🫣. However, now I'm seeing my BIPOC peers create incredible work, so I'm feeling inspired! 🚫🫸🏾This list is not exhaustive so keep your "what about...?" to yourself. As always, I think there's a botanical story in with a Caribbean. HAPPY FRIEND DAY 𝗯𝘆: 𝗧𝗡𝗮𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗰𝗼𝘅 Read: August 2026 Stab Rating: 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪 Camille and Avery are best friends and, ironically so, it is officially Friend's Day. Even though they, and by they I mean Camille, said not to get each other gifts, Avery went ahead and ordered her something. What seemed like an innocent and thoughtful gift, turned out to be something real deadly for the friends. I went into this completely blind after the cover stopped me dead in my tracks on my feed, and Wilcox completely delivered. This story wastes zero time—it’s short, punchy, and packs a massive punch. My only critique? I just wish it was longer! It leaves you craving so much more world-building: Where did these strange plants originate? Were there any digital footprints or old records before social media got ahold of them? And most importantly, did Dominic ever get closure on what happened to his girls? I need answers! 💭 QOTD: Do you have any house plants? A garden? Happy Friend Day- A Short Horror Story Author: Tnae Wilcox Read Date: May 5, 2026 ARC: No Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️| PGS: 23 If you’re looking for a gripping horror novel that hooks you right from the start and drags you into a chilling nightmare, this is it! Even though it’s a quick read, it’s packed with gore and terror. Tay-Tay is the only author I know who can deliver a short horror story that rivals those lengthy 200-page books. Avery and Camille have been best friends for ages. Avery has this quirky habit of picking out “Friend Day” gifts that Camille just doesn’t vibe with. This time, Avery decides to choose a gift based on reviews, but let’s just say those reviews can be pretty misleading—and downright dangerous! Oh, and did I mention that Avery was thoughtful enough to get the same gift for their other friend, Dominic. 🌱Happy Friend Day by TNae Wilcox🌱 (Short Story) I love my Bookstagram community for so many reasons, one of which is getting to find how creative and talented my peers are. This short story by @tnaewilcox tickled my brain in so many great ways. In it, we see the unique friendship of Camille, Avery, and Dominic. Avery is one of those friends who can’t give a “normal” gift to save her life. In the past, she’s given Camille a taxidermied rat. And on this day, she’s gotten each of them a special plant. Special, indeed. When the plant is delivered, Camille thinks it’s ugly. But when it begins to “evolve,” Camille quickly changes her mind and ends up fighting for her life. I really enjoyed this story. So much so that I was disappointed when it ended. I wanted to see more between Camille and Avery. And Camille and…the plant. What we do get is creative and unsettling, and I can’t wait to read more from TNae.

Not a Violent Bone and Other Stories Author: Tnae Wilcox Read Dates: February 19, 2026- February 21, 2026- ARC: No Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️| PGS: 90 In this collection of short stories, Tay-Tay (yep, that’s my nickname for her) really showcases her talent for weaving in elements of horror that let her imagination shine. Even though the book is just 90 pages long, it’s a captivating read. Here are my favorite tales: Not a Violent Bone - This story revolves around a husband and wife facing tough times after Lenore’s accident. It raises the question: how far would you go for love? What sacrifices would you make? I absolutely loved this one! Maybe it’s just me, but I sensed a touch of the great Edgar Allan Poe in it. The Therapist - What unfolds when you’re invited to a barbecue and hidden secrets come to light? This story was both thrilling and surprising at the same time. What About Her - There’s an alien invasion happening, and everyone is left wondering: who will be next? If you’re on the hunt for a quick read packed with horror elements that keeps you entertained from start to finish, look no further—this is the book for you.
