1. LIFE is happening. 2. We’re constantly consuming. It’s too heavy to hold inside 🧠
Journals are important. It’s gotten me through my anxiety-ridden teen years, my wild life after high school, my early twenties depression, and so on.

You don’t have to buy THIS journal, but I hope you buy A journal ❤️

Not to sound sappy, but today we get to read books…
We have books…
In any format we want to enjoy them in…
That feels really good and important to say

Mom Brain by Nicole Hackett - How could I not pick this up
This is Where The Serpent Lives by Daniyal Mueenuddin - got it because the cover looks like something tragic will happen. I loved the title, too.

My youngest acts like he does not like books, but he gets excited when I sit on the floor and start reading. I love that I get to pick out the book. None of my other kids will let me pick out their books, lol. A couple of these titles would be for a kid older than my youngest, so I just downloaded them to my iPad for myself:)

The Wolf, The Duck & The Mouse written by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen
Skunk and Badger written by Amy Timberlake, pictures by Jon Klassen
The Rock From The Sky by Jon Klassen
The Skull by Jon Klassen
The Three Billy Goats Gruff retold by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Jon Klassen

More short stories. I’ve been collected a lot of them. I have some favorites I should post about. I’m always on the hunt for a really good short story. I read one by Joe R. Lansdale that is probably my favorite. I read it like two years ago and I think about it often.

Squid Teeth by Sarah Langan - I found this when I was doing research for the horror panel I did last month
Amnesia by Jalen Tellis - Found this one on Threads. I know Jalen also wrote a horror western that features a black character and I would like to check that out, too.

I’ve been pulled toward essays. I asked you guys for some titles and you guys delivered. Then the algorithm gave me tons more in my Kindle app.

Nerd: Adventures in Fandom From This Universe to the Multiverse by Maya Phillips
Night Mother: A Personal and Cultural History of The Exorcist by Marlena Williams
Why I Love Horror: Essays on Horror Literature by Becky Siegel Spratford
Sick Houses: Haunted Homes & The Architecture of Dread by Leila Taylor
The Horror Theory Reader edited by Jeffrey Andrew Weinstock
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
Born on the Night of the Living Dead: Growing Up with Talking Apes, Killer Sharks and Flesh-Eating Zombies by David Young

I'll be a panelist for the virtual programming at the Cabin in the Woods Film Festival on August 28th — and I've been waiting to talk about it!

The event is called From Reel… …to Read and it's in two parts. First up is From Reel… — a short horror film block that me and five other creators got to pre-screen ahead of the festival. Then we go straight into …to Read — a live book panel where every film gets two recommendations: one from the Spellbound, for the viewer who was completely pulled in, and one from the Unswayed, for the viewer who wasn't really feeling it.

Wanna know what my picks will be? Come find out live — and I have 3 Home Sweet Home Staycation tickets at 50% off to give away to my followers.
