in this week's @wsjoffduty I found out that sometimes a too good to be true deal is actually true. back in December we rented a @roadsurfer RV through @imoova for a baseline $1/day (plus their fee, and an add-on for a bit of extra time) for a four day road trip from Loa Angeles to Las Vegas, via the Death Valley and the Eastern Sierras (where we got married 25 years ago.)

The deal is that RV companies need vehicles moved around to meet seasonal demands, to get new ones from factories to outlets, or just to return one-way rentals. it can cost them $$$$ to hire pros to do it, so instead they make them available directly or through companies like Imoova to people willing to do it for a steep, steep discount.

We stayed at @malibucreekstatepark our first night, and hiked out to where they shot M*A*S*H, and then met up with @epiczam in the Alabama Hills. On the way into Death Valley, we stopped to see the adorned remains of *the* joshua tree, from the U2 album (now fallen, it's much like going to Jim Morrison's grave or something)

Figuring out where to stay was easy for this trip, but we also rounded up favorite places to overnight from some experienced ramblers. I've got my next few trips in mind already

🍁 Fall in the Yukon, Canada.

Kluane Lake was so beautiful and otherworldly during our drive to Alaska in the spring, so we made a note to stay here during our return journey down the Alaska Highway.

The usual blues and grays of the water and mountains were peppered with the yellows and reds of the changing leaves, grasses, and fireweed. Even though it was only late August, the air was already downright cold, and the fall vibes were in full swing.

We enjoyed a little rain here, a little sunshine, and a lot of laziness as we rested up for the long journey ahead.

🏕️ The types of RV camping you can expect to see in Alaska - it’s different from the lower 48:

🌲 Beautiful RV boondocking
🌲 Dry campgrounds with no amenities besides trash and a pit toilet
🌲 Extremely tight parking lot style RV campgrounds with hookups or partial hookups

We see very few public RV campgrounds with hookups compared to the lower 48.

On the plus side, public or paid dump and water fill stations are much more common.

So we are RV dry camping much more than ever before! We can last 7-10 days with our tanks. Our solar and lithium battery have been keeping us powered up, and we’re supplementing with our generator.

We are well equipped in our @ember.rv to live and work off-grid and we have our dry camping routine down. We’ve come a long way from when we first started boondocking with our fifth wheel - it was stressful and we could only last a few days.

Would you sacrifice RV hookups for these views? Do you have any questions about boondocking?

Awesome: launching junk cars off a 300 foot cliff.

Not awesome: The homophobia & MAGAaggression also present at this event.

Fortunately there were many other fellow Americans in the crowd who felt the same way. Guess it was a real authentic Fourth of July.

Those car launches though - extremely fun to witness. Thanks to our friends for coming along for the ride! @toasteronwheels @rilesontheroad @james.and.hatteras

❓ Do you need a caravan for your RV road trip to Alaska?

Not necessarily, but taking this RV road trip to Alaska with @toasteronwheels on wheels has given us peace of mind, made the trip easier, and has added a lot of joy to our summer.

In Alaska there are rough roads, few resources, and long stretches without cell signal. It’s reassuring to have extra help if something goes wrong on this RV road trip.

We’re also doing more tours and excursions in Alaska, so taking turns to care for the dogs has been very helpful.

But above all, it’s been a blast to travel with @toasteronwheels. This is actually our first time doing a longer term RV road trip caravan with RV friends. We’re very social, but like the flexibility to do our own thing. Alaska can be very isolating, and having Sam, Brent, and their dogs around for this RV road trip has made it a lot more fun. We’re grateful that we get to create memories with them this summer.

✉️ this to someone you want to take an RV road trip to Alaska with!

What we saw on our RV roadtrip on the Alaska Highway through the Yukon, Canada to Alaska:

🪧 After leaving Liard River, we stopped in Watson Lake to see the famous Alaska Highway sign post forest. The tradition of leaving signs there goes back to the 1940s!

🐻 We saw plenty of wildlife on the drive including bears, bison, wild horses, and a moose.

🍺 Stopped in Whitehorse for a stock up & brewery visit to @winterlongbeer.

🏕️ Most of the way we just overnighted in pull offs.

🏔️ The mountains got more and more beautiful the closer we drove the RV to Alaska.

🛣️ However, the famous Alaska Highway frost heaves, ruts, and potholes began at Destruction Bay.

🍩 Shout out to this Timbits cereal I was intrigued by but didn’t want to pay $7 CAN for.

Scenes from our week driving our RV through British Columbia, Canada.

Since our original plans to take the Alaska highway were rerouted by wildfires in Fort Nelson, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect from the Stewart Cassier highway.

The first stretch on highways 97 and 16 was already quite rural, though incredibly we had great 5G signal the entire way through.

However, everything changes the moment you turn onto the Cassier. That feels like the real start of the adventure to Alaska. No photo or video can convey how remote this drive is. No cell signal for over 500 miles. No infrastructure besides a handful of mines, towns, & reservations consisting of a few little buildings. Just beautiful rivers, lakes, mountains, and more trees than I’ve ever seen in my life.

After 5+ years of RVing, we’re no stranger to remote places. This is an entirely new experience and we’re loving it! & we’re glad we’re taking the journey with @toasteronwheels

After a week of working, boondocking, and over 1200 miles of driving, we have made it to the Yukon!
