Happy October everyone here’s a spooky read for all of u 🎃 (and a cover that I cannot physically get enough of x)

First thing’s first, Tobi Coventry’s He’s the Devil is one of the most fun books I’ve read in a while. A queer, 80s-esque horror romp, we follow Simon, lost and lonely, and waiting for his new flatmate, Massimo, to move in. Only when he arrives, he seems a bit off. He seems...almost like the devil?

This is a book that as I said, is super super fun, whilst also remaining a really interesting and good read. Wickedly funny, it’s filled with desire throughout - desire for Massimo, desire for change, desire for darkness. It’s also filled with unease, and the way that that can be enmeshed with want. Simon as our unreliable protagonist is a character who is filled with disquiet for a large part of the novel, and disgust; not so much for others as for himself, who he views as ill fitting and alone. It’s natural then, that Massimo, and what may or may not reside in Massimo, takes a shine to Simon - there’s so much to work with

He’s the Devil has layer upon layer of mystery woven throughout. There’s the mystery of Massimo - where he came from, who or what he really is - but there’s also the mystery of Simon. Why is he living alone, and what happened to his former flatmate and best friend, Josh? There’s very good unreliable narration here, and the writing flips back and forward in time, creating a sense that you can’t quite rely on anything you’re told

An absolute rollercoaster, this is suspense at its finest, and a book that explores desire and darkness in all its forms perfectly. It’s a debut, but I’m really looking forward to seeing what Coventry does next. And it’s out in Feb!! So you can’t read it this Halloween but next year it can be one of the first things you pick up ❤️‍🔥

Today, I am missing my absolute favourite business and drinking partner @tobicoventry

I only found one photo of us without champagne or white white and I am so grateful for those wild nights till dusk, our decadent members club hangouts and for those millions of meetings with producers where I always loved hearing Tobi speak so eloquently and passionately about narratives (we ran a book to film scouting consultancy that Tobi still owns).

Tobi is a huge force for brilliance in my life as he hugely inspires me and I appreciate our different but complimentary takes on the world.

Although we haven’t worked together for four years or shared books and stories in the same way he will always be my number one plus one and I can’t wait until 2022 when we can get dressed and hit the tiles again 🥂

With @tobicoventry at Blacks in Soho about seven or eight years ago now. On this night, if I’m remembering correctly, we were celebrating the launch of the online antiques (handsome, pleasant junk) shop @jduncancampbell, @haenikim and I ran for a few years. Remember when Blacks was good? When you could get, like, pheasant pie and steamed syrup sponge for lunch in July and the dim corridors were lit by flickering candles in scallop shell sconces?
