🩸 ‘Massimo lived here now. And things had begun to happen. Sounds, smells, dreams. A private horror show. A usurper in my ordered world…’ 🩸

We are hellishly excited to share the cover for HE’S THE DEVIL by @tobicoventry, a wickedly funny, chillingly suspenseful modern day horror story painfully relatable to anyone who has ever had to share their living space with someone they’d honestly just rather not share it with…

😈 When Simon’s best and only friend Josh moves out of their shared flat, Simon’s world falls apart – and in moves a new flatmate, Massimo.

😈 But Massimo’s brought something with him. Strange sounds come from Massimo’s room, smells of meat drift through the corridor and Simon’s nights fill with disturbing and tantalising dreams. Massimo is awakening something in Simon, something wild and exciting and horrifying that could be the end of him, or maybe a new beginning.

😈 Across the city, meanwhile, bodies are being discovered, torn apart from the inside. Whatever’s in Massimo, whatever’s in the flat, isn’t finished. It wants more…

Out 12.02.26 and proofs dropping *very* soon!

And now for something truly bonkers. I wrote this book in very early mornings and late nights, on my phone sat on the 73 to Tottenham Court Road and in notebooks on my sofa. To see this quiet little dream I had come true gets me very very excited. Thank you forever to @john.s.ash @katiebowdy @rack__roll and @flanaganj13 👹👹👹👹 by @tobicoventry

WIN A BOOK!!!!!!

It’s basically Halloween now at least in my house where we’ve watched about eight horror films already. He’s the Devil should, in my opinion, be read at Halloween because it’s set around then and features a Halloween party where someone spikes the punch and everything goes wrong…

I’ve got a bunch of copies of He’s the Devil to get rid of because people keep sending them back to me saying the book is causing STRANGE THINGS to happen in their homes and they wish to be rid of it. So if you tell me what is the STRANGEST THING you’ve ever seen in real life then I will send a signed and soiled copy to the best one and I will decide this winner ON HALLOWEEN.

Anyway here is a small selection of my favourite things to watch, read and listen to for the whole month of October to treat yourselves as you deserve and be scared or titillated!

All the best,

Last week, The Boathouse Residency hosted its first founding resident - @tobicoventry

Tobi spent some time at the Boathouse to calmly focus on his second, eagerly awaited novel.

For a taste of what's to come, go and check out his debut, He's The Devil, published by @4thestatebooks — a horny, putrid queer tale of uneasy desire and a dangerous hunger to be noticed.

As shown on the 3rd image, the only stipulation of the residency is a painted tile. Each resident is given a tile, brushes and azure-blue paint, and invited to paint whatever they like. These will eventually come together on the bathroom wall, creating an evolving tapestry of the artists who have passed through the Boathouse.

All of our founding residents have now been selected, and we're excited to reveal these wonderful humans in due course.

For those of you interested in becoming a resident, stay tuned for news on applications.

Thanks again to @chrisahlen for the sumptuous snaps x taken in Rye, East Sussex by @tobicoventry

I am deep deep into writing Book Two and I can tell you that the second book is a very strange but also wonderful experience. Because at first it’s like hmm should I write something similar because people seemed to like that or should I have a BIG CHALLENGE or should I do a ghost story?! And the truth is I can only write the book that’s really very keen to come out and it’s still all based on one horrible image I had once in my head and also something I saw in a shop that I thought would be a very cool weapon! There are moments where I’m just having the time of my life making things up and I think wow that was a cool scene it’s very fun and it’s very ‘Tobi’ where the hell did that come from?! And then others where it’s like what the fuck do you think you’re doing this is absolute nonsense written by children but then I remember I’ve already done it once so I just need to get on with it and do it again. I’m not going to say what the book is about BUT there is a weird bird in it and some bad wounds and I’m listening to ALOT of seventies rock. 🌲 by @tobicoventry

Posters for He’s the Devil are still up around East London, only now they’ve been bleached and blasted by the sun and look very Madonna - True Blue. Very cool ❄️ by @tobicoventry

Thirty seven! I feel like I’ve matured into myself in new and wonderful (and difficult) ways in the last year. I love living in the countryside and seeing all the animals getting up to things and I love being able to write down all the stuff in my head and put it into a book and I love my wonderful friends and I love when I come down in the morning and my dog is smiling at me through the little window in the door. by @tobicoventry

This is going to be a really fun event, in my old haunt of Crouch End no less. I will be talking murky morals and queer narratives with the genius @joshsilverauthor whose book Fruit Fly is hands down the book of the summer. Come along! 👹🪰 by @tobicoventry

We are well into Pride month and to celebrate here is a list of queer things I have enjoyed lately so maybe you can enjoy them too or at least just one or two.
- Coming in first it’s ET in a wig. I mean really he’s in drag. Look I have mixed thoughts about ET to be honest I really don’t like him and I don’t think he should be as famous as he is but I always like this moment of raw vulnerability for him. I know he has a hard time in the movie but at least he gets to dress up and also I think he drinks a beer at one point? Gay.
- Next is this performance of Cats the Jellicle Ball at the Tony’s. When I watched this my jaw hit the floor and I thought this is the gayest thing I have EVER seen and then I remembered I was also gay and it felt so cool.
- Isaac Dunbar is a popstar I just discovered whose single Princess feels like Prince meets The 1975 which is very hot.
- Fruit Fly by Josh Silver is like a queer hit of M-Cat in book form, but so much more too. Gripping. Sad. A real thrill.
- Twinless by James Sweeney is a really dark, funny, beautiful film about twins and also about obsession actually. I loved it. Very gay and very twin.
- Eli is maybe my favourite new popstar and she made pop music in her bedroom which sounds like Backstreet Boys. Girl of Your Dreams is PERFECTION.
- MUNA because they’re MUNA.
- To wrap things up it’s these flowers outside my house which just appeared one day. I don’t even know what they are but they sprung up like a big pink forest and you can’t get much gayer than that. by @tobicoventry
