Delta Firefighters IAFF Local 1763 is proud to announce our endorsement of professional firefighter Brother Todd Schierling in his campaign for MLA in Delta North.

Our endorsement is built on the individual we know and the strong relationship Delta Firefighters have shared with Todd over many years. A 30-year Fire Captain with Surrey Fire Service, a lifelong North Delta resident, coach, and volunteer, Todd’s dedication to our community is personal. Raised in Annieville by a proud blue-collar welder who taught him the value of hard work and looking out for others, he carries those working-class roots into every role he takes on.

In his role as President of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (@bcpffa), Todd led the historic expansion of BC’s presumptive cancer coverage—securing Canada’s strongest health and workplace safety protections for firefighters—while driving critical first responder mental health resiliency programs. Alongside his union leadership, he advocates directly for public safety, fire safety legislation, and community well-being, while also serving as President of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund (@bcburnfund) to support burn survivors and critical care across the province.

His leadership across these organizations isn’t driven by abstract policy, but by decades of real-world experience on the front lines and at the decision-making table.

Todd has proven experience in Victoria advocating for the safety and well-being of firefighters and working families. Who sits in the Legislature matters, and having someone with his track record and experience advocating in Victoria will ensure strong, effective representation for North Delta.

Delta Firefighters are proud to support Todd’s candidacy in this upcoming election. We stand with Todd Schierling—a proven leader ready to deliver for North Delta in Victoria.

Today is Firefighters' National Memorial Day in Canada. We stand with the families and colleagues of those who served our community and are no longer with us.

My personal commitment this municipal election is to ensure that Port Moody firefighters have PFAS-free bunker gear, also known as turnout gear. These forever chemicals have been linked to many of the occupational cancers that firefighters experience and new, PFAS-free gear is something that is fully within the municipal government’s control.

Esquimalt and Vancouver have both made the move in order to protect their service people and Port Moody could lead the Tricities in making the move, too.

Occupational cancer is the leading cause of death for modern day firefighters. According to BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit reports, cancer accounts for over 80 percent of firefighter fatality claims. Investing in them is an inheritance to the next generation of leaders, public servants and their families.

Beyond that, investing now also means saving later. Fewer workers’ compensation claims and lower WorkSafeBC premiums are just two of the potential benefits. However, the most important benefit is that another member of our community is able to live a life without the concern that their job is negatively impacting their health.

To all firefighters across Canada and especially to Port Moody Fire Rescue, thank you for all you do for the community.

🚒 This week, members of the Delta Fire Fighters Executive Board attended the 33rd IAFF Canadian Legislative Conference in Ottawa, bringing the voices of our members and the communities we serve directly to Parliament Hill.

We had the opportunity to meet with the Honourable Jill McKnight (@jillmcknightdelta , Minister of Veterans Affairs and MP for Delta, alongside BCPFFA President Todd Schierling (@bcpffa, @toddschierling), to advocate for the issues that matter most to the firefighters and the public we protect.

Our advocacy efforts focused on three critical priorities:

🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Fires: Incidents have surged over 500% in some Canadian cities. Our members face extreme risks from thermal runaway, toxic gas exposure, and fires that can flashover in under a minute. Canada urgently needs national safety standards and a mandatory incident database.

🛫 Airport Firefighting Regulations: Canadian airports are falling short of international safety standards. Passengers deserve adequate rescue capacity, and our members deserve clear mandates to do their jobs safely.

👨‍👩‍👧 Memorial Grant Program: The $300,000 benefit for the families of fallen firefighters hasn’t kept pace with inflation, losing 25% of its value since 2018. The surviving families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice deserve better.

Dedicated to protecting our communities, and standing up for the members who serve them.

Honoured to receive 2nd place in Best Political Campaign Messaging at the IAFF Media Awards 🏆

This recognition reflects something far bigger than a campaign. It reflects the unity of affiliate leaders, government representatives, and community members who stand shoulder to shoulder with fire fighters. And it reflects the power of purposeful communications to spark the conversations that matter most.

A heartfelt thank you to @peterjulian_, former MP for New Westminster-Burnaby, for introducing Motion M-169 in the House of Commons, a landmark step calling for the phase-out of PFAS chemicals in firefighters’ protective gear and fire suppression foam. These substances have been linked to serious health risks, including cancer, and our members deserve better. Peter’s courage to champion this cause in Parliament is exactly the kind of allyship that changes lives.

Advocacy lives in all of us, every member who shared a story, every leader who raised their voice, every community member who helped carry our message forward. When we communicate with purpose, we don’t just raise awareness, we create change. This award belongs to you.

This Emergency Services Dispatchers and 9-1-1 Awareness Week, we’re sharing tips that will help support our incredible dispatchers and call takers!

#1. Provide the exact address of the location you are calling from.

#2. Remain calm, speak clearly and stay on the line.

#3. While a call taker keeps you on the phone to gather information, they will notify the police, fire and/or ambulance teams that are required.

🚨 Bill M 214: The Firefighters’ Health Act Passes Third Reading

On April 13, 2026, Bill M 214: The Firefighters’ Health Act passed its third reading in the BC Legislature with unanimous support, a powerful example of all sides of government working together for the health and safety of BC fire fighters.

In attendance were BCPFFA President @toddschierling, @victoriafire730 fire fighters and Saanich @local0967 fire fighters, and the family of late @vancouverfirefighters Local 18 member Neil Austin, his widow Christina and mother Lynn, honouring those lost to occupational disease.

What’s Next?
The bill now heads to the Lieutenant Governor for Royal Assent. Once signed, a 12-month timeline begins for:

✅ A comprehensive cancer and mental health screening plan

✅ A formal review of Workers’ Compensation Presumptives

This legislation complements the work already underway with the provincial government to track carcinogenic exposure and build a fire fighter cancer registry, forming a stronger foundation for evidence-based protections province-wide.

Why It Matters
With cancer accounting for 85% of line-of-duty deaths, this bill moves BC toward a proactive prevention model. It also ensures equity for wildfire firefighters through a new five-season service threshold for screening.
This victory reflects generations of advocacy by fire fighters across this province, and is a major step forward for the health and safety of all BC fire fighters. 🚒💨

A special thank you to MLA @misty.vanpopta for introducing the bill and for her steadfast advocacy on behalf of the health and safety of BC firefighters.
