I’ve accepted an ice bucket challennge from IAFF DVP Mike Carter’s nomination to help raise funds for ALS research to find a cure.

Brother Kimball Yorston, the President of the Chestermere Professional Firefighters Association, is fighting this terrible disease like a champion.

I’ve nominated IAFF L1763 Delta President Mike McMillan, IAFF L1217 Surrey President Mike Vincent and IAFF L162 friend Neil McMillan to continue the challenge and raise some money.

Here is the link to the fundraiser. Thanks for your donation and stay safe.

Delta Firefighters IAFF Local 1763 is proud to announce our endorsement of professional firefighter Brother Todd Schierling in his campaign for MLA in Delta North.

Our endorsement is built on the individual we know and the strong relationship Delta Firefighters have shared with Todd over many years. A 30-year Fire Captain with Surrey Fire Service, a lifelong North Delta resident, coach, and volunteer, Todd’s dedication to our community is personal. Raised in Annieville by a proud blue-collar welder who taught him the value of hard work and looking out for others, he carries those working-class roots into every role he takes on.

In his role as President of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (@bcpffa), Todd led the historic expansion of BC’s presumptive cancer coverage—securing Canada’s strongest health and workplace safety protections for firefighters—while driving critical first responder mental health resiliency programs. Alongside his union leadership, he advocates directly for public safety, fire safety legislation, and community well-being, while also serving as President of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund (@bcburnfund) to support burn survivors and critical care across the province.

His leadership across these organizations isn’t driven by abstract policy, but by decades of real-world experience on the front lines and at the decision-making table.

Todd has proven experience in Victoria advocating for the safety and well-being of firefighters and working families. Who sits in the Legislature matters, and having someone with his track record and experience advocating in Victoria will ensure strong, effective representation for North Delta.

Delta Firefighters are proud to support Todd’s candidacy in this upcoming election. We stand with Todd Schierling—a proven leader ready to deliver for North Delta in Victoria.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE — PROVINCIAL BUDGET CONSULTATION BC

The B.C. government recently began its annual budget consultation, and, on June 5th, on behalf of all first responders and burn survivors, BCPFFA President Todd Schierling had the opportunity to present an oral submission to the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services at the B.C. Legislature in Victoria. Allotted 5 minutes, he delivered two recommendations that represent priorities the Association has been advancing on behalf of the membership. In support were FCABC Vice President Dave Sampson and BCGEU Wildfire Rep Jesse Wallace.

Recommendation 1 - PSPNET: Therapist-Guided Mental Health Care ($233,000)

Our first recommendation calls on the Province to commit $233,000 in annual funding to bring PSPNET—a free, confidential, therapist-guided online mental health program—to BC's public safety personnel.

The need is acute: 44.5% of first responders screen positive for symptoms consistent with one or more mental health disorders - compared to 10.5% of the general population. WorkSafeBC data shows psychological injury claims among BC fire fighters have surged 32% in the past five years. PSPNET's outcomes are strong: within eight weeks of therapist-guided care, anxiety symptoms dropped from 49% to 18%, and depression from 58% to 25%.

Recommendation 2 - Burn Care Pressure Garments ($100,000)

Our second recommendation, advanced in partnership with the BC Professional Fire Fighters' Burn Fund, asks the Province to fund custom pressure garments for burn scar treatment - estimated at approximately $100,000 annually for the approximately 145 BC burn survivors who require them. BC is currently the only major province without a funded program: Saskatchewan provides 100% coverage, Alberta and Ontario cover 75%. At present, the Burn Fund covers only about 20% of the cost, with the remainder falling on vulnerable families at their most difficult moment.

I had the pleasure connecting with Fort St. John Local 2143 leadership, and BC Wildfire smoke jumpers with president Paul Finch of BCGEU at wildfire base, where members prepare parachute 🪂 packs, train, and stand ready for deployment missions when called upon. I am thoroughly impressed with their operation. Thanks for the invitation Paul and Seb.

Reflecting on the 15th Annual Robert E. Hall Legislative Conference, I’m filled with gratitude. Thanks to the work of our predecessors, the IAFF @iaffpresident (Health and Safety Division), our dedicated BC team, and Premier Eby @davidebybc who announced the expansion of 8 new presumptive cancers and reduced cumulative period for esophageal cancer. This is significant recognition for our members’ safety. We’re one step closer to full coverage for all cancer types, and I’m proud of the collaboration with the Minister of Labour @jenniferwhitesidenewwest and the MLAs who champion our firefighters issues. The advocacy continues; this week we celebrate a significant advancement. It's with immense gratitude that I reflect on the 43rd BCPFFA Biennial Convention in Vancouver. My heartfelt thanks go out to Local 18 for their exceptional hospitality and for bringing our convention to this beautiful city.
Our mission to safeguard firefighters remains paramount, and we'll continue to advance it with unwavering dedication. I'm eager to collaborate with our newly elected executive board and all our affiliates as we drive our agenda forward.
I'm already looking forward to our next gathering—the 44th Convention in 2027, in the great wide north: Whitehorse, Yukon! taken in Sheraton Wall Centre Vancouver by @toddschierling
