In Jun 2026 we had the chance to create this site sensitive work as a homage to coastal fishing and to the fish living in the estuarial waters of Ummanz, in the Rügen Island of northern Germany. The work was meaningfully commissioned by a group of local citizens. Through it I renewed my commitment to create art that addresses all beings going beyond western mono- naturalist understandings. We worked together with a great and large team of people, accompanied and supported by a fantastically engaged local mediator and with an artist in the coordination. It was intense, it was a lot of work and it was worth the efforts. Political art must not necessarily be shocking nor about spectacles and big gestures but it can be subtle, enacting non human animals and can be fine, delicate and radically tender. Why to break something in art when the world is already broken? Art be for me like a thread to mend the relations that have been broken. To strengthen ourselves together. To bloom together through art. Performers: TogetherTogether Collective, Ron Alonso Berger, Jee Chan, Angela Muñoz Martinez, members of Perform[D]ance Stralsund. Integral design: Michel Jiménez

Thank you to everyone who took part in this wonderful collective event!

On June 27, around 250 people followed artist Amanda Piña and the performers through the summer evening on the island of Ummanz.

“The fish is silent, but the fisherman is not!” is the central statement of her commission. Yet in her performance, Amanda Piña gives a voice not only to the people of Ummanz, but also to the eel, the Bodden, the Baltic Sea, the land, and the current.

Following a procession accompanied by music, the eel and the last full-time fisherman of the small island near Rügen received an award in a para-institutional ceremony of honor. In the shallow waters of the Bodden, the audience then watched as the sun set and people transformed into marine creatures, merging into collective bodies.

Ummanz’s new patrons have taken on responsibility for a pressing issue affecting small fishing communities worldwide. Concerned about the decline of small-scale coastal fishing, they have invited Amanda Piña to create an artistic work that opens up new perspectives on the topic.

Through her performance, Amanda Piña honors the knowledge and work of the Bodden fishermen and forges new connections to the sea and its creatures. She opens our eyes to a different approach that incorporates unseen and suppressed knowledge into future action.

The performance „Future Songs of Fish and People“ is the first installment of the three-part series „Atlantic Undercurrent Circulation“ by Amanda Piña for the Neue Auftraggeber von Ummanz. We look forward to her upcoming contributions!
