♋ANNUAL READING GOAL ACHIEVED! NICE.🎉

69 books completed as of today. Auspiciously, (and coincidentally, I swear) this milestone has been reached with exactly 69 days remaining in 2026. What could be more nice?

“But Dan,” interjects absolutely no one, “however did you achieve this audacious and mildly titillating feat of basic literacy?”

Well, I certainly didn’t do it alone. I’d like to thank all the authors whose acquaintance I’ve made here on social media—you’ve motivated me to become more attuned to contemporary literature and I’m much better for it. Thanks, also, to my back and core muscles for providing such frequent and agonizing reminders that I need to slow my dumb ass down on the gym/weightlifting front. “Sit those sweet cheeks on the sofa and read!” they command me in their language of pure pain. I obey.

Don’t think I’ll be resting on my laurels all through November and December, either. There are still several new (and new-ish) books remaining on my hit list for 2026. You’re next, @dl_alvarez, @gregorspamsa , @wayne.koestenbaum, and @sylviajonesjonesjonesjones!

Single-serving books, coming right up. 🍽️

Five queer reads under 200 pages, each one built to be finished in a single afternoon. Think of them as the tapas of queer lit: small plates, big flavour, zero commitment issues.

Only one of them is actually a novel. The rest? Two plays, a monologue and a poetry collection that rewrites the Bible for gay girls. Swipe through, pick your portion and clear your Saturday.

Which one are you ordering first? 👇

Bible verses, but make them gay. Emily Austin rewrites Catholic prayers for queer women, trans folks and every “strange woman” the church left out. It’s sassy, horny and tender, and CBC named it one of the best poetry books of 2024. At 72 pages, you can finish it with your morning coffee. @emilyraustinauthor @brick.books

What if the future king of England grew up gay? Jordan Tannahill’s play has queer and trans performers run with that thought experiment, weaving royal fantasy into their own stories. The New York Times made it a Critic’s Pick, and it’s horny, chaotic and seriously smart about power. @jordan.tannahill

Fresh out of a psych ward hold, this narrator is doing his best impression of a functioning person. He’s an aging, working-class gay man trying to make rent while “queer” gets gentrified into oblivion. It’s the final book in Lippens’ Wisconsin trilogy, and the only actual novel in this stack. @nate_lippens @semiotexteofficial

One man, months alone and a confession that won’t quit. Tom Cole’s debut is a monologue about addiction, sex and never having enough money. It’s bleak, but somehow it’s also laugh-out-loud funny. 128 pages of pure oversharing. @tomdanielcole @thesongcave

A glamorous couple, a public scandal and a childhood that comes crawling back. In Sam Max’s play, Connor is pulled back into memories of Fake Dad, the Safe House and an imaginary friend in the basement. It’s a dark fever dream you won’t shake for days. @sam_____max @uglyducklingpresse

Next up in the 2220 Archives this Wednesday!

The Poetic Research Bureau hosts Tom Cole for a reading and conversation with writer Bradford Nordeen, celebrating his new book on Song Cave, Chimes: A Monologue.

Doors: 7pm Reading: 7:30pm

∆

Through a striking and unforgettable performative monologue, Tom Cole’s Chimes: A Monologue introduces the distinctive voice of a first-person narrator mentally indexing his lifetime of memories. His individual experiences of shame, addiction, and self-destructive behavior are recounted with mischievous humor, even if they have left lasting scars. Now, after months of monotonous solitude, a storm of unresolved issues resurfaces, triggered by the incessant and irritating clang of an out-of-town neighbor’s outdoor wind chime. As his self-examinations become an obsession, feelings of alienation and unworthiness worsen and lead to unconventional solutions.

In the tradition of the plays of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Georg Büchner, Charles Ludlam, and Sarah Kane, Cole weaves the very bleakest of humor with startling and heartbreaking feats of intimate self-reflection. Speaking on issues of class, sex, intimacy, and the highs and lows of queer reality today, Chimes asks how and where one finds the answers to living a complicated life.

Like Marcel Proust’s madeleine or Clarice Lispector’s cockroach, the sound of wind chimes outside of the apartment occupied by Tom Cole’s narrator catalyzes the fragmented monologue that comprises Cole’s debut novella “Chimes: A Monologue” (The Song Cave, 2026). As if flipping through a photo album, the narrator’s memories—embarrassing hookups, dabbling with meth, auditioning to join a cultlike polyamorous “family”—are dispatched with an unaffected, definitive tone.
