🟨 BOOK LAUNCH 🟨

Celebrate Tom Cole’s debut book, Chimes
at the Bureau - Friday, October 9 7pm
in conversation with Julia Jarcho

🟨 🟡

“Chimes is an intimate shape shifter—it’s a poem, a novella, a play, a prayer—carnal, spiritual, sweet & funny. I love this book.”

—Eileen Myles

🟡 🟨

Join us to celebrate the debut book by our dear friend, Tom Cole, Chimes: A Monologue. It’s already one of our top staff picks of the year! Tom will appear in conversation with Julia Jarcho, author of Throw Yourself Away: Writing and Masochism.

The two writers will discuss ideas of process, performance, and the environment that brought Chimes to fruition. After their discussion, Tom will take questions from the audience and then sign copies of his book. This event is free to attend. Please RSVP via the link in our bio or via www.bgsqd.com

We adore Tom and are so thrilled to celebrate his genius new work here at the Bureau. We hope you’ll join us!

ABOUT CHIMES

From Jay, one of our booksellers: “Chimes is a hypnotic, darkly hilarious dreamwalk through one man’s unhinged experience of covid lockdown and its aftermath. With the unnamed narrator - a torqued, paranoia-prone sober addict and artist - we move, stream-of-consciousness style, through the torpid days of the pandemic, as he obsesses over his neighbor’s annoying wind chimes, impulsively chases down a package thief, interviews to join a leather family, worries about relapsing, fantasizes about being tortured, then taken care of, resurfaces psychosexual childhood memories, and lets his (somewhat tortured) mind wander. So smooth, evocative, depressive, funny, kinky, stunning, strange. I loved it.”

Like Marcel Proust’s madeleine or Clarice Lispector’s cockroach, the sound of wind chimes outside of the apartment occupied by Tom Cole’s narrator catalyzes the fragmented monologue that comprises Cole’s debut novella “Chimes: A Monologue” (The Song Cave, 2026). As if flipping through a photo album, the narrator’s memories—embarrassing hookups, dabbling with meth, auditioning to join a cultlike polyamorous “family”—are dispatched with an unaffected, definitive tone.

Follow our link in bio to subscribe and read Paul McAdory’s review of “Chimes: A Monologue” in our Fall 2026 issue—now for nearly 40% off the newsstand price. by @tomdanielcole
