🕯️ We sing this lullaby lament, Laye Laye, for this day of grief, to all who lost loved ones to this cycle of violence over the past three years and beyond 🙏

As the third memorial day of Oct 7th chimes upon us, Makam Salam holds space for all who endured violence, expulsion, terror, grief, starvation and loss of life.

As a collective of musicians from across the SWANA lands and the 3 Abrahamic faiths, we recognise this date does not mark the beginning of bloodshed in the Holy Land; nor of the Palestinian people's loss of homes, land, loved ones, olive groves, security and dignity; nor the first time Israelis and Jews feared for their safety or mourned those most dear to them.

This cycle of hating, dehumanising, dispossessing, avenging and killing goes back long before 7th October 2023.

We humbly echo those who try to break it: who embrace education, lay seeds for collaboration and believe in a future of justice, peace and reconciliation.

We pray, meditate and above all, play music together. The solution lies not in violence but in open ears and hearts, sharing complete histories, and a desire to listen, create and build as one community.

🎶 This haunting Kurdish lullaby was sung by mothers to their children as bombs fell on their homes. A song made to calm a child in a dark night feels like the is the little we can offer today. This is Olcay Bayir with Makam Salam singing and sending our prayers to those who need it today.

🙏 Some of the people already living this way forward are the Jerusalem Youth Chorus, young Palestinian and Israeli-Jewish singers who have spent years learning to hear each other. We're deeply moved that they'll join us on our next evening together.

🤫 Save the date: Thursday 19 November, EFG London Jazz Festival, The Cockpit, London.

🎶
Sung by @makamsalam with @olcaybayir at @nextdoorrecords_ , filmed by @jamie.reibl 📸 and @abraham.dein

Waking up in Brazil after the election and seeing the far right gaining ground here and across the world is frightening. Politics built on fear, division and dehumanisation are putting our humanity at risk.

I want to share a moment from my song ‘Rehumanise’, the title track of my upcoming album, performed at @vortexjazzclub in London last May.

I wrote this song in October 2023, when I was desperate, watching the genocide in Gaza begin and seeing how quickly people could dehumanise one another.

In this song, I ask: How can we rehumanise?

We NEED to rehumanise. It is too late.

Full song + lyrics on YouTube.

Thank you Vortex for supporting independent art and bringing people together. 🙏🏼

Música completa + letra no YouTube.

Thank you, @shambalafest! We packed the tent until no space left, made people dance, cry and hug. That's why we do this 🕊️ Save the date: Nov 19 for a next special performance! 💫

People squeezed and spilling out the sides, by the end the whole tent was dancing and everyone was on their feet clapping. What a feeling.

Then something happened we didn't expect - after we finished, a man from the audience walked up, took the mic, and spoke for a long time about how deeply the music had moved him.

This is why we do this. Musicians from across borders, making music together and hoping together for a shared, just and peaceful future.

Thank you Shambala, and thank you to every single person in that tent. It was an honour and a real joy 💛

📅 Save the date: Thursday 19 Nov, EFG London Jazz Festival.
Very special guests, to be revealed soon 👀

Thank you @jamie.reibl for playing and filming these beautiful clips! 📸🎷

We loved making #shambalafestival dance with some Kurdish folk songs!
Thank you everyone such an amazing audience.
This song, Es Kevoke (/ kevokim), is about the dove 🕊️ wanting to fly to its beloved, be accepted and seen by, and longing for the union and belonging 🤍
