Remembering the Brig St. John

For generations, the story of the Brig St. John and the Irish immigrants who lost their lives off the coast of Cohasset in 1849 has been preserved by the people of Cohasset and the Irish-American community of the South Shore.

The AOH of the South Shore is honored to continue that tradition of remembrance.

Please join us on Sunday, October 4 for our annual Brig St. John Commemoration in Cohasset.

Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM, with Monsignor Kevin O’Leary serving as celebrant.

This year’s commemoration comes at an extraordinary moment as Cohasset prepares to take its place along the Global Irish Famine Way, ensuring that the story of those who made that journey more than 175 years ago continues to be remembered by future generations.

We hope our Brother Hibernians, friends and members of the South Shore community will join us.

Something very special is coming together for October 3.

The bronze shoes of the Global Irish Famine Way are arriving from Ireland, and they will be on display at our Launch Event alongside the actual granite stones selected to become the base and plinth of the Cohasset monument.

For the first time, you’ll be able to see the physical elements of this monument coming together — before they become a permanent part of the Global Irish Famine Way in Cohasset.

Join us on Saturday, October 3 at 6 PM at Plymouth Quarries in Hingham as we share the story behind Cohasset’s selection as the second Global Irish Famine Way location in the United States, the connection to the Brig St. John, and the progress being made toward the monument’s May 2, 2027 dedication.

We’ll also officially introduce the Bronze Shoe Society and have a special reveal for those joining us that evening.

This is an opportunity to be there while the pieces of this historic project are quite literally coming together.

This is a gathering for the sons and daughters of Southie, Charlestown, Norwood, and West Roxbury who still carry the fire of the old country. It is a reckoning of shared strength, an unyielding bridge built across oceans, and a revival you need to feel in your bones.

To lift a stone is to hold the bones of the earth. To carry this one across an ocean is to carry a people’s memory. 🌊🪨

Pulled from the tide line along Waterford’s rugged Copper Coast, the Cloch Bán (The White Stone, 115 kg) became the catalyst for rediscovering Ireland’s lost culture of stone lifting.

But its journey didn’t end in the Irish sand.

Sent across the Atlantic to Boston—a city forged by generations of Irish emigrants—the Cloch Bán now serves as a tangible, unbreakable link between homeland and diaspora. For centuries, our ancestors left Ireland with empty hands and heavy hearts. Today, their descendants wrap their arms around this ancient granite, feeling the cold, stubborn grit of the Atlantic shore against their chests.

When you put wind under the stone, you aren’t just testing muscle. You are lifting history, grief, resilience, and belonging.

The Famine Way Ultra took runners from Dublin to Strokestown along the National Famine Way.

165 km of endurance, determination and pure grit, but also a brilliant sense of camaraderie along the route.

Congratulations to everyone who took on the challenge, and to all those who supported along the way and helped make the event happen.

A huge thank you to @werunwildni for organising the event, and a special mention to @eslerpaul, who crossed the line first in an exceptional time of 19:55:41.

The route carries a deeper story, following in the footsteps of the Strokestown tenants who made the journey to Dublin in 1847.

In 1979, Jim Callery bought the run-down Mahon family estate in Strokestown, County Roscommon, Ireland. Inside he found an 1846 letter from starving tenants pleading the estate for relief (second photo), among so many more historic documents and mementos from that dark chapter in Irish history.

@tommackeyii and I were lucky enough to get a tour from Jim and his daughter Caroilin, and learned what is likely just a bit of the immense amount of history in this space that is now the National Famine Museum in @strokestownpark . If you are ever anywhere near the area, don’t miss it!!

Memories of future past.

The Celtic Strength Championships wasn’t just one high-level comp in June of 2026. It was four. We leaped together: Team Highlander. North American Scottish Backhold Wrestling Championship. Northeast Irish Collar and Elbow Championship. Highland Games Championship. Got some scratches & bruises along the way, yet we landed on our feet. We learned: what works & also what needs improving.

For those who believed, thank you for believing. For those that hated, thank you too. All these traditions, federations, cultural organizations, teams, & disciplines came together to share a field in a historic world first.

With so much going on this wasn’t meant to be just for crowd entertainment. It was meant to be an exhibition of Celtic strength culture & heritage. For the enthusiasts, for the athletes, for the Celtic nerds, & for those fans & friends that came with them. This year was to capture & showcase that all these seemingly separate disciplines are actually very related, stemming from the same Celtic Tree of Life. They can co-exist & co-mingle together on one field. Why?

People from different walks of life & interests can see each other & meet on equal ground. The Team Highlanders can dive deeper into historic Stonelifting. The Celtic Folk Wrestling & combat modalities can meet the Highland Games Heavies. There weren’t any barriers. Everyone could listen to a cultural panel discussion on “What is Celtic Strength?” by leading professors & cultural experts. Then everyone could go share tales of high adventure or bury hatchets with great food & pints at a traveling Irish pub on site too. That is/was the greater picture.

By recording it through photography like this via @emmkmedia & videography by @tommcmannfilms @_jake_abrams @sjfurm @darrenwynn923 & also @emmkmedia we can immortalize these traditions while helping preserve & promote them for future generations.
