A lot can happen in 10 years. In 2016 when this photo was taken I put pen to paper for Creation, my first musical based on the story of Adam and Eve. I was stumbling blind, cribbing Aaron Sorkin and Book Of Mormon, and trying to work out what I loved about musicals. Fast forward 10 years and flirtation has become obsession.
This week I’m workshopping Pin, my adaptation of Pinocchio as bookwriter and lyricist with @marcteitlermusic. Writing stories has become a great love, and for my words to be brought to life with a creative team is just the actual best.

This @bourgeois_guitars beauty is my latest addition to the family.

Not quite got all the fancy finger work yet, but give it time.

Making up for it with a John Martyn drawl

⭐️ COULDABEEN ⭐️, my new single that dropped on Thursday, was a labour of love not just musically with a @domjamesmusic co production, but also in the artwork from the incredible animation talents of @juliancamilograf. The detail in his pictures, the jokes, the smoke and mirrors, the darkness and the humour that captures the dark side of modern capitalism yet reduces it to ashes with a well pointed finger and a smirk.

His film Testimonio, which I scored, channels the same twist, and is well worth a look

Evotion

Starting as a double bassist, and having lugged the instrument over countless miles in rain sleet and snow, underground and overground, I can’t tell you how much joy I get from turning up with nothing more than a tuning fork to create improvised music with strangers. It is music without borders, and without baggage

PIN’s journey continues at @artstheatrewestend with our second round of workshops. @miss_gloria_onitiri and Matt Seadon Young handling 15 parts each and lifting @marcteitlermusic nascent melodies into the stratosphere 🌍.

Director @natalieabrahami and I scribbled into our scripts while Marc and @natalie_pound scribbled into their scores. Amendments and wholesale rewrites will be made before this bird will fly, but it’s thrilling to be moving again with the incredible support of producers @hartshornhook and their wonderful team

@marcteitlermusic and I after our first workshop, celebrating a little win. There will be many more to toast - the show’s journey to stage will be minimum 2 years from now as we develop it with @hartshornhook.

@marcteitlermusic and I have been hard at work developing a new musical with @hartshornhook. The first part of this Frankensteinian experiment was a series of 3 workshops with an incredible cast including @celindeschoenmaker, Louis Maskell, @hadleyfraser and @rebeccamtrehearn at the @artstheatrewestend.

Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be sharing some of the extremely edited highlights of this, my first workshop as a book writer lyricist, collaborating with a composer. It was relentlessly humbling and educational to see into Marc’s process, with each lyric coming to life in unexpected ways.

Together with visionary director @natalieabrahami, our brilliant MDs and arranger @ryanmackenziemusic our cast brought things to life from the first hour of the first reading. Such a thrill to hear it after weeks and months of hashing away at the material in our dark little cubby holes.

‘Forget’ was born back in spring in @domjamesmusic home studio.

@camille_ruz is such a quick study, she brought such good vibes to the track and the day. Definitely check out her solo work on the streamers.

We bounced lines lyrics and harmonies around free flowing. When group sessions fly, it’s pure magic

One week until we drop our new track ‘Forget’ ft @camille_ruz. We’re excited to share this one that’s been cooking for a while.

For now check out the warped synth work from @domjamesmusic and these waving hands on loop
