TOM NEMEC: A CAT IN A BOX 🎤

“We were never really a family. We were just kind of roommates. We were never taught how to be a family.”

Tom is sixty. He got sober at twenty-four, in 1990, and started doing standup not long after. It took him this long to tell the story — because for years he’d put pieces of his childhood into his sets only to have people come up afterwards and say, “That didn’t really happen, right?” 🎭

🌍 The turning point was Hurricane Sandy in 2012. His house was ruined. Nobody in his family called, though they lived thirty minutes away. He sat on his front steps watching every neighbour on the block receive breakfast, coffee, family, help — and the one next door, who hadn’t spoken to his father in years, got picked up and taken home. “Nobody’s coming to get me.” That’s when the pretending stopped.

✨ The title comes from an analogy he’d been using for years: you raise a cat in a box, you feed it, and when it grows up and acts strange everyone says poor cat, it was raised in a box. Say the same about a dysfunctional childhood as an adult and people tell you to get over it — you had a roof, didn’t you. 💫

🎬 He wanted to be Pryor and Carlin because they were the first adults he ever heard telling the truth. The show is dark, funny, and directed by Jim Mendrinos, who told him: “It’s your show. I’m just here to guide you.” 🌟

“If you’re coming because you relate to it — please come and say hello afterwards.”
