With just over a week left to view our current exhibition, ‘Markle; content is just a glimpse,’ we thought we’d tempt you with a few photos.

In this first image, we see two artworks:
Left: A graphite drawing titled ‘Barbara’, an intimate portrait of her friend, local author Barbara McLean created by Marlene Markle in 1978.
Right: an oil painting of Marlene by Robert Markle, 1957.

The second image is a video-still from, ‘Markle; content is just a glimpse’, a short narrative video that captures the artist Robert Markle, seen through his wife, Marlene’s eyes. Video co-produced by the DAG and the Tom Thomson Gallery and created by local filmmaker Jesse McCracken.

If you haven't had a chance to visit the gallery to see this exhibition or if you missed the video during your last visit, don’t miss out—it's worth the trip!

This untitled 1982 piece in our ‘Markle, Content is Just a Glimpse’ exhibit gives a moment of pause as viewers pass through the gallery.

It stands out on the black wall, drawing eyes to its alluring color, shape, and size. This piece was generously donated to The Tom Thompson Art Gallery by Bernie Lucht in 1994, and has found its way onto our walls this Summer.

The early 1980s was a huge shift for Robert Markle as he left the chaotic Toronto art scene for a more focused rural way of life. It was during this time he began to reconcile with his Mohawk identity, actively incorporating Indigenous cultural symbols, themes, and perspectives into his art.

It was also during this time that he began to transition between mediums, finding a deep love for mechanical whimsy and Ontario folk art.

A romance which laid the groundwork for his famous “whirligig” kinetic wood sculptures later in the decade. One of which you can view @tomthomsonartgallery if you haven’t already!

Your girl is in another magazine!

Major thank you to @rrampt for featuring my work in their new summer issue. It was a pleasure to be interviewed and chat about my exhibition at the TOM, ‘Where the Willows Weep & Orchids Dream’ from earlier this year.

Physical copies of Rrampt can be found locally within Grey, Bruce and Simcoe Counties.

Have you stopped by to check out Markle, Content is just a glimpse here at the DAG ( running concurrently with the @tomthomsonartgallery )?

In the first image we see a piece entitled 'Priceville Print ed 6/7'. This print is a touching example of collaboration. The series of prints was designed and prepared by Robert, together with his friend and colleague Otis Tamasauskas. Robert passed away before completing this project, so Otis printed the series from Robert's prepared designs after his passing.

The second image shows an untitled print, the making of which can be seen in the video 'Priceville Prints', produced by John Vainstein here in Grey County and featuring not only Robert Markle but also Otis Tamasauskas, and Harold Klunder, which is on view here at the DAG.

In the last image we see two Lithographs, namely Table Dancer and Fire Dance both of which were printed in 1987 and have an almost map-like quality before the figures within begin to reveal themselves.

Which print is your favourite?

Chantry Island Lighthouse, Southampton 📍
(A little piece of Southampton, tucked inside a box 🤍)

I created this piece for the 2026 Box Art Project: A Remix, a fundraiser supporting arts programming at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery and Durham Art Gallery.

Inside is an acrylic painting looking across Lake Huron toward Chantry Island Lighthouse, surrounded by actual sand, stones and driftwood collected from Southampton Beach.

This one became quite personal for me. I took the reference photos during one of those simple summer days at the beach with my kids—feet in the sand, playing by the water, burying themselves and helping me search for little stones along the shoreline.

I’m always drawn to places where I can feel the energy of the water and the land around me. There’s something about being beside the bay that grounds me—the open horizon, the rocks beneath your feet, the sound of the water and that feeling of being completely surrounded by nature.

Southampton has that feeling for me. This particular stretch of beach is peaceful, beautiful and still feels like a bit of a hidden gem. So instead of simply painting the landscape, I wanted to bring a little of the landscape itself into the work. The sand, stones and driftwood carry a piece of that shoreline—and a memory of a summer day spent there with my kids. ❤️

I hope it finds its way to someone who feels that same connection to this beautiful part of Ontario 🌊

The boxes will be exhibited and auctioned at the Durham Art Gallery, August 22 – September 12, with proceeds supporting arts programming at both galleries.
