Drawn from the TOM’s collection, A History of Reverence brings together works from the past sixty years that look to earlier artists as sources of inspiration, reflection, and dialogue. From direct homage to playful reinterpretation and critical response, the exhibition explores the many ways artists engage with those who came before them—revealing artistic history as an ongoing conversation between past and present.

On view from September 19, 2026 to January 2, 2027.

Opening October 10, D’Andrea Bowie’s cut a path through the weeds and call it a garden explores our relationship with the land through a process-based sculptural practice. Working with materials drawn from the earth and commonly used to shape the built environment, Bowie considers how these materials transform through both natural and human intervention.

October 10, 2026 – January 2, 2027

Join us on Saturday, October 17 for an Artist Talk from 1:00–2:00 PM, followed by a reception from 2:00–4:00 PM.

The Tom Thomson Art Gallery will host its second annual fundraising event, Palette to Palate: Let’s Go Wild!, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 7–10 PM hosted by MC Philly Markowitz. This special evening invites guests to celebrate art, creativity, and community through an engaging program of wild-inspired food by Chef Jason Merton, wine pairings, music by DJ Todd, vault tours, a silent auction, and interactive art-making with Heather Travis. Guests are encouraged to embrace the evening’s theme by dressing to impress and showcasing their wild side, with the Gallery’s curatorial team awarding prizes for the most imaginative attire.

Join us for our second annual fundraising event, Palette to Palate: Let’s Go Wild!, on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 7–10 PM.

Tickets are $75, with all proceeds supporting the Tom Thomson Art Gallery’s exhibitions, programs, and community initiatives.

For artist D’Andrea Bowie, materials are more than a means of making—they carry histories of place, labour, and transformation.

Working with plaster, cement, ceramics, copper, glass, and stone, Bowie explores the relationships between the natural world and the built environment. Her process of casting, carving, assembling, and experimenting reveals the ways materials hold traces of human intervention and geological time.

Guest Curated by Andrew Hunter in 1997, "Up North: A Northern Ontario Tragedy" explored personal autobiography, Canadiana, sports, and mythic Canadian deaths by intertwining the lives and mysterious disappearances of two cultural icons: Tom Thomson (who died in a 1917 canoeing incident) and Toronto Maple Leafs hockey player Bill Barilko (who died in a 1951 plane crash).

Hunter's installation mixed historical artifacts—such as Tom Thomson landscape sketches, a cedar-strip canoe, and archival film clips of Barilko's Stanley Cup-winning goal—with pop-culture bric-a-brac, a 1940s hi-fi playing songs by The Tragically Hip, sculptures by Carl Skelton, and handcrafted wool garments/hockey jerseys.
