“We are constantly navigating a system built on visibility, where stepping back feels like a threat to your very existence.”

Fresh off its Special Mention for Environment at the 18th Psarokokalo International Short Film Festival, Daniel Brandt and Anthony Dickenson’s Without Us stands as a striking, immersive exploration of climate breakdown, collective anxiety, and the radicalization of online discourse.

Following a radicalized taxi driver and an unexpected bond, the film bridges cinematic storytelling with pulsating audiovisual energy, tracing the fragile threshold between systemic collapse and human vulnerability on the digital margins.

In our feature for PSAROKOKALO MAGAZINE, writer Soultana Koumoutsi sits down with the creators to discuss the geometry of contemporary panic, the soundscapes of protest, and why finding stillness has become a radical act in a culture obsessed with acceleration.

“Interim spaces force us to confront who we are when the noise stops... We wanted to capture that fragile threshold between belonging and complete erasure.”

I would still describe this movie as haunting- in a good way. I remember feeling strange at the end, some kind of subtle partial closure or relief: something movies don't always make me feel.... Germany, did you get to watch it yet? 🥹 🐦‍⬛🪶

I hadn't posted all the stills on the feed and I came across these gorgeous stills again and had to share 🙃❤️

WITHOUT US
🌍 Psarokokalo Special Mention (Environment): Without Us

When the world collapses around us, where does extremism end and the raw need for human connection begin? In the incisive "Without Us", directors Daniel Brandt and Anthony Dickenson craft a striking modern tragedy set against environmental collapse. Amidst the noise of social media distortion and climate dread, a radicalized driver forms an unexpected bond with a young passenger, shifting a misanthropic impulse into a quiet act of redemption. Blending experimental soundscapes with an immersive visual atmosphere, Brandt and Dickenson deliver a poignant, cautionary tale for the next generation—a profound meditation on isolation, empathy, and survival.

Programmer’s Note

"Without Us acts as a sensitive seismograph of our times. It transforms the abstract dread of climate collapse into a visceral, handcrafted act of resistance, reminding us that true ecological empathy begins precisely where isolation yields to tenderness."
— Sultana Koumoutsi (Artistic Director, Psarokokalo ISFF)
