What a night. 💛

Thank you to everyone who came out Sunday to celebrate culture, community, and connection with us at Celebrate Culture: Roots Beyond the Surface. Being surrounded by so much love, art, and generosity was truly something special.

Huge gratitude to our partners at the Wishtoyo Chumash Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara for making this night possible, and to our special guest and sponsor, Belle Hahn, for her incredible support.

Thank you to chef Eileen Foster Randall for the beautiful catering, and to DJ Suzette Lopez of Mirame Entertainment for keeping the energy going all evening.

Cheers to Elly Iverson from Eji Event Co. for generously providing all the beer and wine, to Davey and Sophia for bartending all night, and to Jorage for the beautiful (and educational!) mezcal and tequila experience. Your cocktails were a highlight. 🍸

To the artists and culture bearers who shared their work and stories with us, thank you for trusting us with something so personal. Full list of artists in the comments below. 👇

The exhibit is up all week at MCA Santa Barbara. If you missed the mixer, come see the work in person before it closes. It’s an experience not to be missed.

Su’nan means “to continue,” and this is only the beginning. 🪶

📍 MCA Santa Barbara, 653 Paseo Nuevo
🗓️ Exhibit up through this week

Beautiful Juneteenth celebration honoring @rodrollephoto’s beloved wife @sojournerkincaidrolle posthumously. Juneteenth became a federal holiday only five years ago to celebrate the emancipation of slaves in 1865 at the end of the Civil War. Also known as Black Independence Day or Freedom Day. Announced June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas. #juneteenthcelebration #emancipation #endofslavery #freedom

Artful & inspiring weekend kicked off at Elevate Gallery (La Cumbre Plaza) for Black History Month Art Salon ~ Images with a Global View featuring @toniscottart & @rodrollephoto 💞

Special guests @rubylee.maya & @cwabg 💞

“Art is a weapon we need.

Not a weapon of destruction.

A weapon of construction.

I now have a deeper understanding of that:

Art disrupts erasure.
Art interrupts silence.
Art insists on presence - being seen and experienced.

When oppressive regimes and shifting systems narrow our humanity, art expands it. When rhetoric, misinformation and lies flattens us, art adds texture. When fear builds walls and drives chasms of divisiveness, art sketches doors and constructs bridges to greater understanding.

Black people have always understood this.” James Joyce @cwabg

Beautiful event From Emmett Till to SNCC & Beyond at Highways in Santa Monica. Profound and historically relevant performers and performances by Gia Scott-Heron, Jason Luckett, PeggyTrotter Dammond Preacely, ADAAWE, and so many more. Delightful chats with the young members UNA-USA. Thank you for having me. Once again sharing a show space with my Dako Vanguard collective members, Robert Lowden and Toni Scott is priceless.
