POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Black History Month As a Black and Indigenous artist, Black History Month is a time of deep reflection, honor, and celebration. It’s a moment to recognize the resilience, creativity, and contributions of my ancestors—those whose stories have shaped history but were too often erased. Art, activism, and storytelling have always been powerful tools for our survival and expression, and I carry that legacy forward in my own work. Throughout this month, I’ll be sharing images of my work several times a week, spanning different points in my practice—from sculpture, painting, and mixed media to digital renderings and installations. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackAndIndigenous #ArtAsResistance #HonoringOurStories

During my time working on my MFA at UCSB, I fell in love with the majesty of King and Queen palm trees and their fronds. Their elegance, resilience, and unique forms struck a deep chord in me, inspiring the creation of my series, "Palms of Resilience."

For me, these forms express a powerful sense of strength and endurance through their shape and material. The sculptures are abstract, with flowing, textured lines that seem to capture movement and tension. The way the material folds and overlaps reminds me of struggle or resistance, but there’s also a graceful resolve in their posture that speaks to perseverance.

The themes of resilience and perseverance run deeply through this work. Many of the forms in the series remind me of human figures, embodying the idea of overcoming adversity and finding strength in vulnerability. The dark, polished surfaces add to the intensity, making the sculptures both commanding and thought-provoking.

"Palms of Resilience" is an invitation for viewers to reflect on the inner strength it takes to navigate life’s challenges. I wanted to explore how resilience can show up as both a quiet, enduring force and a bold, assertive statement. The title speaks to the dual symbolism of palms: as trees that endure the harshest conditions and as hands that create, hold, and heal. Together, these elements tell a story of strength, survival, and grace.

Remembered, 2025

Acetate, pigment, King Palm, wood, twine, steel

This ship brings viewers into the journey of the Middle Passage by confronting them with the individuals who have built what was colloquially referred to as the ā€œNew Worldā€. In this sculpture, African people are honored and seen beyond the flattened narrative of slavery. The sails are embedded with catalogued images of those who brought their intergenerational knowledge, alluded to by the King Palm ship, and endured the violent conditions of capture, objectification, and forced labor.

I'm honored to share my newest installation, Living Prayers: Indigo Waters, on view August 10–16 at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara in the Eileen | Norton Gallery as part of Celebrate Culture: Roots Beyond the Surface.

These works were created outdoors using indigo pigment, water, gravity, sunlight, and even rain. The paintings became collaborations with the natural world, allowing water to move as memory moves—unpredictable, ancient, and alive.

As a Muscogee and African American artist, my work reflects on water as the source of life, the keeper of memory, and the sacred current that carries our stories across generations. Alongside the monumental indigo paintings, I'll be exhibiting sculpture, portraits from my Bloodlines series, poetry, and video.

I would love to share this work with you.
