It’s been a year since @tonyfitzpatrick9 left us and not a day goes by that I don’t think about him. To say that Tony was an incredible human being would be an understatement. His generosity was downright overwhelming at times. He brought people together like no one I’ve ever met. He was fiercely loyal to those closest to him and went out of his way to support those around him always. Tony would have loved knowing that his family and friends got together tonight to laugh, cry and tell hilarious stories in his honor. There’ll never be another Tony Fitzpatrick.

One year gone / yet ever present

Ode to Tony Fitzpatrick

He was the big man in Tokyo
Searching for swimming white ghosts.
Finding the comfort of baseball
And standing face to face
With his own ever evolving
Sense of wonder.

In the streets of Dublin
He was captivated by the familiar
And found comfort among strangers.
Seeing himself in their faces.
Hearing his laugh sound like theirs.
And shaking hands much like his own.

Then there was New York.
The big city with the bright lights.
The land of hope and opportunity.
The intersection of desire
and discovery
and validation.

The Crescent City beckoned
With its buoyant rhythm
And its appetite for seduction,
Wanting him for themselves.

But it was here where he began
And here is where he’d stay.
Only time could tell him
That this must be the place
To drop anchor
and make waves.

Here, among the sinners and the singers,
The pirates and the painters,
The talkers and the talked-about,
The squareheads,
The oddballs,
The miscreants.
A place peppered with notorious jokesters
And mysterious tricksters.
And he, the magnet
That drew them all together.

If it were a carnival
He would be both the barker
And the main attraction,
The flame thrower
And the sword swallower,
Half man, half beast.
All while sitting in the front row
Under the big top
Eating handfuls of popcorn
And laughing at the absurdity of it all.

These were his people
And this was his city.
Love it or hate it,
but don’t leave it.
Chicago.

Puzzle Haul

Puzzle Purchases for September 2026
Total: 31

💠 Most of these were bought secondhand and used. I felt very lucky to have found quite a few puzzles by artists (see the full list in my linktree if curious) this month. I was also shocked to find the older version of Murder Castle by Holly Carden.

I met Peter Max in 1994. He was in Chicago as the official artist (or something such) for the World Cup. I was only 20 and this was my first “real” gallery opening. It was slightly surreal…it was a gallery in a shopping mall, there were a lot of people and the canvases were selling at a brisk clip and I recall the gallery workers bringing the freshly sold pieces to him, at which point he added fresh doodles or flourishes. I recall being nervous to approach him, but he was friendly and I recall we talked about guitars. It’s funny to look at this now, because at the time, I just thought his art was so great. But only a few months later, I was working with @tonyfitzpatrick9 and that just exploded my views and thoughts about art and the artistic community. Just kind of funny. I no longer see Max’s art the same way, but it was definitely an important step in my personal relationship to art and I’ll always be grateful for that. Godspeed, Peter Max.

On The Beach.

Objects found along the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

REPOST - Inspired by and dedicated to a funny exchange on Facebook many years ago between two dearly departed friends - Tony Fitzpatrick and Shelley Howard - longtime pals and key figures in my ongoing quest to pursue the visual arts. Both could be crusty, cranky old goats, and nothing brought out those qualities quite like the annual Air & Water Show, a polarizing summer event that wreaks havoc on the nerves of city folk who don't appreciate sonic booms and terrifyingly loud, window-rattling, foundation-shaking jet planes. In this Facebook exchange Tony was lamenting the so-called proud display of military might while Shelley seemed mostly concerned that it was wrecking his dedicated nap time. With that in mind, I reached into my pile of beach junk and came up with this image, which I call "Disturbing the Peace."

Pretty stoked to get this @tonyfitzpatrick9 piece in the casa today. I discovered Tony in high school through the music of @steveearle and his work has meant a lot to me through the years. And “This Child of God” looks just like me dog, Lula, (even though this was Tony’s dog, I believe) and it befits Lula’s spirit to the hilt. Special thanks to his son Max for his help and for carrying on his father’s legacy. #tonyfitzpatrick #art #chicago #dogs #thischildofgod
