The first and only performance of Belial at @calarts - I would describe the sound as “death noise core”. The band consisted of guitar, bass, drums, turntablist, electric cello and vocals. It was very loud. We were told that people could hear the performance, in their cars, as they exited the freeway about a 1/4 mile away..

The entire band dressed exactly the same: white shirt and pants, black loafers. We went to the butcher and asked them for their beef scraps, which we then sewed together into meat masks. By the end of the show, I could start to smell it. I liked it.

✨ This is an exciting post to write! My friend Ken Lewis ( @hanger18 ) has just launched an online marketplace called @thesurfboardrack - as a world class purveyor of all things related to the highly influential subcultures of surfing and skateboarding, I can not think of another person who is so perfectly positioned to bring a project like this to life, authentically.
✨
Ken and I are both aligned on contemplating the magnitude of the impact that these subcultures have had on so many of us. These mini-universes saved our lives. They introduced us to music, and art, and larger-than-life personas who invariably seeped into our subconscious and set us on our own journeys of discovery and adventure. It continues today, perhaps with even greater consequence.

I'm so happy to be included alongside close friends like Andy Davis ( @andydavisstudio ) as co-participants in the birth of this portal; to share the new objects and ideas that reflect our various creative projects. And to even be adjacent to legends like shapers Skip Frye and Roy Sanchez, whose vessels of expression will be featured prominently, is an inspiration.

The Surfboard Rack will function like a jumping off point for new brands, a backyard board swap, a DIY art gallery, or an impromptu conversation, sharing tall tales, hunched over the back of a pickup truck. The history of surfing, skateboarding, art and music is still being written, and this is one of the great, new chapters.

Back in the day my Brother from Another @tonylarsonstudio was auctioning off his top 100 boards that he did for Girl to build out his garage as an alternative studio/show room... Looking back it's kinda funny given how his art career has progressed but at the time the only thing that came to mind was "we need to snap you with them before they are gone, immediately." So, we did. There are probably another 100+ boards missing here including the Modern Chairs and Interiors series but so it goes! Much love Brother!
