Excited to announce that this fabulous risograph poster “Plants and People Kicking Ass Together” by the brilliant @ashacanalos will be on view in “absolute alternatives” curated by Maleke Glee, opening this Thursday, Jan 29th at @cadvc_umbc.

The show includes a few artifacts from Volume III of @toolbookproject “Work Book”
including this limited edition poster, which was an insert included with all Work Books.

Seems like a good time to think about “Kicking Ass” in different ways right now…

You can find more info about this show and other studio news in my linktree.

Giulia Mangoni italian artist @gmangoni who was supposed to do her exhibition “Ciociaria Market Project” at ArtPort Kingston in early March. The show was set up like an outdoor market-stall with small artisan made objects in relation to her large scale paintings. We will do the show but here are some previews. #toolboxproject @artportkingston #rome #hudsonvalleyart

@gabriellemertz here w another work from my series The Look of Labor/The Sound of Labor. This one pulls visual data from a number of news media labor/union groups, including those representing workers at The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ABC, NBC, Vox, Consumer Reports, Jacobin, BuzzFeed News, The New Yorker + others. .

The Look of Labor, The Newsguild of New York, Local 31003, CW, Vox Media Union, Digital pigment print, 2019
.

This series is a group of works that uses visual & sound data captured from recent labor protests & unionization movements by workers at cultural institutions & media outlets. The data is pulled from social media & live streaming protest videos to create a series of works that distill & translate the action into abstracted color, light, & form. The method of extracting & straining the data alters & reconstructs the data with each part of the operation to create an iterative structure & final product that exists somewhere between a photographic work & a painting. .

The color fields that appear in these works reflect the recurring dominance of specific colors in the signage, union logos, & protests in the original data. .

These works are connected to an ongoing body of data- and sound-related work that I have been exploring for a number of years, as well as my work in the political & institutional arena on cultural policy, nonprofits, and philanthropy. .

@gabriellemertz here on the last day of my Instagram takeover of Toolbook!
Paris is Burning is a 14-foot pigment print that uses visual data from the Agence France-Presse newsfeed of the yellow vest protests last year in Paris to create a large-scale photographic work & pigment painting.
The yellow vest protests focused on mobilizing around economic justice issues in the country, with escalating incidents leading to fires in the streets & chemical smoke/tear gas set off by police.
Paris Is Burning, 2018, pigment print, 44 x 144 inches/112 x 498 cm, edition of 5, 3 AP

@gabriellemertz here with another from my series, The Look of Labor/The Sound of Labor:

The Look of Labor, MOMA, Writers Guild of America East, 2019, Digital pigment print . .

This one utilizes & combines visual data from two different sets, from the effort by Museum workers at MOMA to unionize & from The Writers Guild of America East, which represents film, TV, news & digital media writers. .
This series is a group of works that uses visual & sound data captured from recent labor protests & unionization movements by workers at cultural institutions & media outlets (including New Museum, MOMA, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Vox, BuzzFeed & The New Yorker, among others).
